yah, lots of fun, seeing new poultry and poking them for blood!
congrats mainely seramas on your NPIP testing and great you are going to be a tester (just yanking your chain about the blood letting). I know we need more testers in the state. Karl Rau used to be a tester and he says he is now out of it although still raising birds.

Just one question.Did he sterilize the blade after each bird? This seems to be a part they leave out.Maybe it's just me,but if you don't sterilize the blade after each bird,if one is affected, doesn't that infect every bird after?I made sure they sterilized the blade here, but he was not going to.

in a flock, if one bird is infected, the whole flock probably is too.
it's when they leave your place that everything needs to be resterilized. my tester did it between birds but if you are not soaking the test needle for like 5 mins, it really is not much better then water.

Bio-Security works very well! Testers are gowned and booted. Sterilizing the blade after each bird is not nescessary, If the first bird is tested positive, then the rest of the flock is infected and no futher testing is required! If your flock is testing positive, you are put under quarantine.

Bill was gowned and Booted, Part of the New Bio-security, You can carry diseases on your clothing and shoes. Anyone coming into to see your flock can infect your birds. You can infect your birds!http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_health/birdbiosecurity/ http://www.umaine.edu/vetlab/Documents/AI-Flockowner.htm If I'm testing your birds then I would want to be gowned and booted. I wouldn't want to take anything home to my flock.

my tester was not gowned and booted, no gloves, he was dressed just like you or I. since bill is going to teach you, is this what he said to do? I have yet to see a tester dressed in bio suit for testing.
I have seen vets at the auctions wearing booties but no other bio clothing.

Austin Braun does dip his pick in a solution that he keeps near him. So some do dip to clean.
Tony, a lot of these things you are commenting on are general knowledge, also I'm certain there are other testers that are here on BYC that would gladly talk with you about these things.

From Cathy Hunnewell:

Hi everyone, Sorry for being so late in getting this notice out, but, the fourth of July weekend just threw me off.
However, just a reminder, our next Northern New England Bird Fanciers meeting will be on July 12th @ 10 AM
at the Farmington Fair Grounds. Jerry would like help in finishing up the Signs. There maybe a brief meeting with an Auction afterwards. Last month, Jerry & Lauri had provided us with light refreshments.

Anyone that would like to ride up or follow me from my side of the world, your welcome.

Poultry Run Farm are you around anywhere or busy with kid stuff?

We will be there for sure, one kid in tow.... We joined last meeting, even though we didn't get to stay for much with the 4-H event. Haven't been on much with working lots of over time and 4-H days last week end.

Works out great, cause her 4-H poultry meeting is the same day in the afternoon in Farmington~love the saving gas part

Well, what you saw of the meeting was about it. Sorry you missed out on the painting- lol!
This meeting will be more of the same. Did you notice the man seated on the picnic table, not Jerry, president, but bald dude (hope he doesn't read this- ha ha oops), that was/is Austin Braun, he started the Central Maine Bird Fanciers club (the name is a tad different) and also will do the NPIP testing Aug 2 at the poultry show.
May I as Miss PRF do you ever sit down and do nothing?!?! Take care and Joanie_Maine are you lurking around the place? your quiet too...which means your either up to your eyes in fuzz or slugs in the garden (in whick I reccomend drinking the beer instead of putting it in the traps, then you don't care if they eat your garden!!!)

Now I don't drink so please take that as a joke!

Geesh, We've known Austin for years and years and years (OK I'll stop) We are members of CMBF I'm actually the awards person for the shows, love doing it... We were into poultry long before Sarah arrived, got out of them and almost 5 years ago got her a call Duck and she did showmanship at the Windsor Fair, placed dead last and she went on from there. Figured she would get discouraged but nope, made her love 'em and the shows even more. Now a few breeds later and she now has her own breeding program and several nice birds bred by her she's showing this year, there is no stopping her, not that I'd even want to try

Of course I do have to admit I like going to the shows too....

The thing she enjoys the most is Showmanship, speaking in public and doing demos at the 4-H clubs about the birds. Most anywhere she can talk, one of her favorite things to do...
Yes, I do sometimes get a few hours of sleep
