I am so thankful I found this post. Having an almost identical issue with my broody hens fighting over baby chicks and some casualties.
I am going to separate the momma and the most newly hatched chick and put them in a large dog crate inside the coop to keep momma and baby safe for these first few days. Have already lost one chick from this hatch
I have the baby in a plastic tub with a heat lamp in the house for now until I can get out to the barn later after work to put it back with momma safely in the dog crate.
Edit: I just realized this is a very old post, but it was helpful just the same!
