Ok, so I am a 4-h leader, and I am volunteering at camp again next summer. My local extension agent told me to decide what I would like to teach, and I think I am going to suggest embryology. I could bring eggs in various stages of incubation as well as some in lockdown for the kids to see develop and hatch. It will be warm enough that I won't have to worry about the eggs getting chilled while candling. I only live 45 minutes from the camp ground and I have a power inverter for my car which could power the incubator on the way down to keep the eggs warm. Then I could just bring the chicks home after camp. What do you all think? I am really excited about the idea.

I also have tortoises and for them I use these little plastic heat mats or pads so when I started hatching the chicks I thought I would try them and see if they worked. I have had no problem. The chicks do great right out of the incubator. I use paper towels to cover them so the clean up is easy! They have temp controllers attached so you can set the exact temp and you don't have to worry about a brooder light catching fire. I have the metal dome lights in the box but I use a low watt light bulb since it is just a light source and not the warming source. I also put a little stuffy bear in with them on the heat matt and it warms it gently too that way the have a warm cuddley spot. I took a break from "stalking" the hatchlings to give them a rest from my big nose squashed against the incubator window

Welcome to the hatch along! Usually you get some that don't hatch for a variety of reasons. I can offer some suggestions that might help. 1). Be sure to boost humidity at lock down so the chicks don't get shrink wrapped. 2) Once they do start hatching, don't keep opening the Bator to take them out. 3) If you don't have a turner, be sure they get turned regularly. 3) Don't keep taking them out to candle. You could drop or damage an egg. 4) Keep busy getting a brooder ready and leave the eggs alone. Happy hatching:)
