This is a very old thread but if your chicks are doing like the first post described, they are probably too hot. Pasty butt is also often caused by overheating. Raise the heat lamp and make sure it's only heating part of the brooder. I usually keep food and water in the cooler side, so they learn there is a cooler area to move to.
