Chicks shipped

Aww how cute! I ordered 10 chicks from Meyer too. Mine won't be here until the first week of May, so I have quite a wait yet. I also ordered from Meyer because it was the closest hatchery to me. I wanted them to get here as fast and safely as possible. Glad your little ones are doing okay! Sorry you lost one... :(

Thank you :) I decided to go for an assortment because after seeing 'not available' on every single breed I wanted, I knew it would be faster to get (I get too anxious waiting for a long time). I will be going to tractor supply and the feed store when they get chicks to pick certain other breeds out. :) I may order more EE's from meyer. They seem to always be available, and I love green eggs :)

I got some EE's as well! Sadly I'm not able to get a big assortment, because my coop is too small. My parents gave me a 10 chick limit. Not sure if I will be getting any extras added. Sure hope not! I don't want to end up with any roosters. I already have two, and they don't really get along very well... :/ How are you chicks doing at the moment?

They are all fantastic :) some are eating and most are sleeping. My chihuahua is super jealous of them. Last night when I was testing temperature I had to keep throwing her toy for her. If I didn't pick it up quick enough after she dropped it behind me I would get a really high pitched bark which woke the chicks up every time. It was pretty amusing.
I am babysitting chickens for someone I know until she finds a place outside of city limits. She has a bantam rooster that I gave her last year, and he definitely has little man syndrome. he's not very people friendly, but he's short, so he never flogs high enough to get past my boots. :) (yet at least)
Because of him I'm afraid to get a standard sized roo. I love roosters and I think they are absolutely beautiful, but soo many horror stories about them! my luck, I would have the meanest roo of them all! I think someday I will take the chance because I really want to incubate chicks for my boyfriends 4 year old son. Hatching eggs are more expensive than the chicks themselves! and due to shipping conditions they are not guaranteed hatchable, but because I want certain breeds, it's probably the better route anyways.

I have two rhode island red roosters. I have had some pretty bad experiences with roosters, but these guys are the sweetest ones I have ever had. My youngest rooster is only 8 months, so he still likes to think he's in charge, and he ocassionaly pecks at my boots. I have had 14 roosters in the last two and a half years, and only six of them turned out nice. Most of them were hatched by my hens, and I found them homes before they were 5 months old. I noticed that my sweetest roosters have been the ones that were hatched by my Buff Orpington. I don't know what it is, but for whatever reason I have better experiences with roosters that were hatched and raised by a hen.

Don't buff orpington roosters look like hens? I was givens roosters as meat birds and I threw a fit to my ex because I swore they were hens. I only remember that they were a pretty blonde color.

Not that I've seen. Buff Orpington roosters are usually very large, and they have a broader chest. They are the exact same color though.

hmm. I wonder if that is just a mystery i'll never solve.

So do you already have chickens at your house and just ordering more to add to it? If so, What's your flock like?
