Chipping away at rights...

I give you the Chico, CA City Council.

They are preparing to pass mandatory non-burn days complete with the requisite fines for offenders.

A small group of well placed complainers has compromised the rights of the rest of this towns citizens on a number of issues.

Though in this case they got heat from the feds stemming from a report stating that our air quality is among the worst in the nation. I've flown into LA in the summer and we don't look anything like that.

So do you want to wait until you look like LA and then put some regulation in?

Now that would make a good bumper sticker..."I wish smoking was the only right we have to worry about losing...."

Smoking is bad...but legal!
Taking away rights for a good cause...We will find that we have no rights but lots of good causes that we are forced to support.

I had to read the whole thread, and the irony here is, everyone is moaning about their rights to breathe clean smoke free air. kinda got me giggling a bit.
let see if you get it?
yes smoking is bad for you, yes I smoke, no I don't smoke around people who do not smoke unless it i in my own home, MY HOME not theirs. don't like it don't visit, your probably going to irritate me anyway.
NOW:
smoke is bad. yep
new carpets? their carcinogen chemicals, heh didn't think a carpet could kill you huh?
cleaners disinfectants, Bleach!
air fresheners, aerosol spray cleaners, PERFUME, that can of spray on no stick cooking spray, your car sitting in the driveway warming up,Teflon pans, this list is endless.
see where this is going?
nope not one of these deadly products are illegal, taxed beyond belief or looked down upon yet people die of respiratory failure caused by their new rug/s. by mixing chemicals not realizing that some mixed together cause a deadly gas.
children are inhaling the aerosol from anything they can get their hands on, is the product illegal? no
kids are over dosing on cough medicines, and their parents prescription drugs, are they illegal? no

Now here is an irony most do not even think about.
Cigarettes are taxed so high because they need to increase the school budget/s. yes their main goal is to insure children never pick up the habit, but boy oh boy they sure want that cigarette money for the schools. double standard.

All excellent points.

And you have to read underground media to learn this stuff. Ever wonder why there is so much more cancer than 100 or 200 years ago?

No not necessarily but I don't want to wait until America looks like Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia or China right now in terms of individual liberty before I speak out against the erosion of those liberties either.

I care about the environment but I care about freedom more. People can learn to be responsible without being forced to, but once freedom is gone its gone for good.

A key issue here is that once the budget is balanced on those taxes (or any other sin tax) what are they going to do if they actually do price the people out of smoking and cigarette revenues dry up? Naturally they will have to tax something else to the same degree. Its not they will ever say "I guess we don't need that money any more".

Most smokers, not all, are relatively low income these days.
I'm not partisan (trying not to be anyway) but I can't help but notice the irony of the democrats, and Arnold, who have always railed against "balancing the budget on the backs of the poor" doing just that.

Cigarette's arent illegal either though. and I can chose what carpet, or cleaner or pan I use.. don't have to be subjected to it by someone else's choice.

I'm a non- smoker with no children.. I'd be willing to bet most of the smoker's in this thread have children so buy cigarettes and consider it a contribution to your children's education! LOL I'm not against cigarettes ... just dont want to breath in the smoke in public areas.
