That was the serious pits. You could see the movie projecting on the cigg smoke. When it used to be legal it didn't bother me that much. Now that it's illegal I can smell a cigg being smoked 3 cars ahead of me at a stop light with my windows up. It's very disgusting now.

That being said I think restaurants should always be non smoking, but bars should have the choice. The health issue in a bar is kind of a moot point. Alcohol is worse than ciggs. Like Farmerlor said it's hard to sit in a bar all night long without a cigg.

What I find amusing is when a restaurant or any business has their employees smoking right in front of the entrance. You have to walk through a cloud of smoke to get inside. Of course if they keep raising the cigg tax people will eventually stop smoking.

I dont think restaurants should be forced to be non smoking to suit you. I think you should decide ifin you want to spend your money there. That being said, there were restaurants here in Houston that advertised that they were a non smoking restaurant and they did very well. So did some bars with the same adveritisments. They customer should choose not the government. It wont end there folks, they are about to start choosing a whole lot of stuff for you ands yall dont see it coming. Its not a left or right issue either, both parties are guilty.

Everybody needs to read those last two sentences again. Bad legislation is a lot worse than bad smokers. You can walk away from bad smokers. I can avoid restaurants and bars (although I should not have to) but I'm kind of stuck with this country.

This isnt something to "suit nonsmokers" it's a health issue. I go to bars .. not to drink or smoke but to play pool... comparing alcohol with cigs is not the same thing. Someone sitting next to me drinking a beer is not affecting my health at that moment. Unless they leave and drive.. but that's a whole other topic that is also regulated by laws. I'd certainly frequent a pool hall that wasnt a bar .. if there was one. I do like socializing with my smoking/drinking friends though. If cigarette's didnt produce smoke that was toxic to non-smokers.. I wouldnt have a problem with it. If smoker's sat at a bar and put a patch on or chewed gum... more power to them.. but when that smoke wafts over to me and I have to breath it in and it makes my eyes water.. that's a whole different ball game. CA's restaurants do fine... , our hotels offer smoking and non-smoking rooms.... so you can puff to your content... in your own air space.

Run-A-Muck Nice rant.. I aree with you and I wasnt talking about responsible smokers who use ashtrays... my comment about parking lots was about smokers who dump the ashtray of their car out in parking lots... it happens all the time around here and in doing animal rescue I've seen many wild birds who've tried to eat the filters and butts die from it on many occasions... so I'm sure that makes me a bit more intolerant when I see innocent wildlife affected too... I avoid places that allow smoking just like you avoid ones that don't. Works for me. I actually smoke a cigar once in awhile.... maybe one every 3 months and the cigar shop is a smoking lounge, they always ask me if I want to light up there , I politely decline, quickly get my cigar and leave. I can't stand all the smoke in there. I enjoy my cigar out on my deck on a nice evening where it only affects me and my bf who is also smoking one. I don't even let my dogs out when we are smoking... I guess the difference for me is public places vs private.... if I was told I couldnt smoke a cigar on my deck I'd be hopping mad but in a public place .. I just don't see the issue when it's a health hazard that could affect others.

Sorry I wasn't aiming my rant at your earlier comment, I was just trying to say not all us smokers are bad...lol
I agree though it's nasty when you are outside and see someone had emptied there car ashtray on the road...I am not possitive on this, but I thought I heard a few years ago how deer in a certain part of Florida were getting hit on the road ALOT because they were eatting the cigarette butts off the roads...Kinda like they were addicted to them..

No problem, I just wanted to make sure you knew I wasnt directing it at you or anyone here.. just venting on the smoker's that do dump their trash. Man that is nasty the deer are eating the butts too... gross. I wonder if it's mainly during mating season

What do you mean by "activists"?

people with nothing better to do than try to control someone else's life. when they make a change they move on to another issue for the pure satisfaction of control and effect. i submit our wonderfull EPA and OSHA as examples of the higher level. the moron in the local HOA that thinks chain link fence is a personal attack on his home value and you should only have custom wraught iron is the bottom feeder. when you get a knock on your door because your fireplace is burning or your grill is smoking you will recognize them. so, what's your carbon footprint looking like today ????? it's coming.

when you get a knock on your door because your fireplace is burning....

I give you the Chico, CA City Council.

They are preparing to pass mandatory non-burn days complete with the requisite fines for offenders.

A small group of well placed complainers has compromised the rights of the rest of this towns citizens on a number of issues.

Though in this case they got heat from the feds stemming from a report stating that our air quality is among the worst in the nation. I've flown into LA in the summer and we don't look anything like that.

I agree with you, however, not all that OSHA does is bad. I had a company that did contractor work in the Houston area refineries and I was glad for them and their safety standards. I had to carry a 2 million dollar insurance umbrella and I just could not imagine the hit of a death due to silly circumstances. I went to safety training all the time and OSHA pointed out stuff that was unsafe that I had no idea that was unsafe.

They have burn days here. and are trying to do away with wood burning fireplaces in certain areas. We also get no rain for about 6 months out of the year and forest fire's take out home's yearly so some regulation is needed. I'm sure you've all seen CA on fire on the news a few times......

Even the slightest smoke chokes me. I have asthma. I tried to go to a local bar and have a pitcher of beer with my hubby last November. I got through a glass and a half and couldn't take it any more. The smoke free bar was crowded and didn't have any available seats. Now I'm not much for going to bars so that's not a big deal. There's one restaurant in our town that people smoke in and I can't go in. But the one's who really suffer are the wait staff and servers. Yet even they can choose not to work somewhere they can't breath.

Interestingly, the Iowa senator who pushed this legislation to fruition into a law is a millionaire attorney-turned-State Senator married to another attorney. Her husband, the big wig attorney, was the Iowa lawyer who prosecuted big tobacco for a settlement paid to Iowa.
She builds her wealth from tobacco dollars then quickly passes a law to see the end of tobacco.
Shakespeare called that IRONY, kids.
