Choking on Diesel Fumes *Update Page 6*

Your mostly right. The piston on its up stroke is hit by expanding air from the fuel igniting to soon. It hits the piston unevenly an before the rod is strait with the cylinder. Pistons fit in to the cylinder with a slight gap that gives them room to freely move up an down. The sudden, uneven hit causing the piston to cock sideways an the sound is the piston skirt hitting the cylinder wall an resonating threw the engine. The resonation is what gives it its nickname, valve chatter. The end effect is scoring of the cylinder walls, broken piston skirts or in bad cases the whole piston its self cracks. Its never good to hear a knock. Lots of bad things can happen.

Update on an old problem. Our neighbor had been cooperating and not running his truck as much. But an ongoing problem with their cats and our injured chickens and ducks has turned the situation south. Now, to get even (and he even said as much today) he parks his truck in the closest spot to our house. To paint the picture, we are on a court where the houses are very close in the front. Our driveways are right next to each other and the window to our office is at the top of our short driveway. Anyhow, he backs his truck up in the driveway so the huge tailpipe, that sticks out to the side, is pointed directly at our house and window, just inches from our driveway and property line. Then he idles it for a very long time, up to 10 minutes, in the warm California summer.

This morning, he had already idled it for about 10 minutes. Then he stepped hard on the gas so the engine was revved up as high as it would go. We have been ignoring their attempts to provoke us, but . . . come on. i went out and put my hands up, as if to say "what????????". Finally got him to turn off the truck so we could talk. He admitted he was doing it to get even, and went on to say he can park wherever he wants and run his truck for as long as he wants. So this situation has nothing to do with the mechanics of the vehicle. It's just him trying to be as rude and inconsiderate as humanly possible.

My husband and i are just here trying to live our lives in peace. We keep our animals on our own property, we are quiet after 10pm (and most other times, also), and we don't spew toxic fumes at our neighbors. i'm not really sure what to do about the situation.

I'd make sure the batteries to my video camera were charged and set time/date. Film this for at least a week, then let him know you did this. If he isn't ready to stop playing games its time to communicate to the authorities. It is dangerous not just to you, but for all living creatures to inhale this on a continuing basis. If you have to close windows, then if it is hot, you need to turn on the air. And unless you open all windows to keep the fumes from being caught in a room, what is in the air will linger. For small animals, particularly birds, this does pose a risk, as also small children, pregnant women, older people and those under risk conditions, prone to asthma or bronchial problems...and allergies.

California? Doesn't Cali have fairly strict laws about air pollution? I thought those laws included idling engines....... You might want to look.

IE it is against the law in Cali for a trucker to idle his engine all night while he sleeps, and in most cases it is against the law for buses to idle for long at the station.

Then I'd include something from your Dr with the videos. But first, does your neighbor know the effects on you with asthma? If you can get proof (maybe by having someone with you whom is unbiased as you talk to him specifically on this, then try to put it down on paper, word to word, dated and signed by both you and the witness) then this may look as favorably legally. He is intentionally poluting and intentionally poisoning the air space in your living areas.

Have any idea of the truck's weight? If it is 10,000 pounds or more, by law, max time for idling is 5 minutes, and it has to be 100 feet or more from homes. This is CA law.
