Cluckawalla Valley has moved! TAKE THE QUIZ, PG 23!

Have you ever tried to change a donkey's name? Right now I can yell "Jack" and that gets his attention. At 650 pounds, that's seems important. Besides, what about the little ditty, about Jack and Diane, 2 American kids growin' up in the heartland, John Mellencamp, circa 1982?

Oh yeah, you're too young for that!

I am NOT too young for that!

I remember the song!

And I see your point, he's 5 and used to his name.

Ok, serious envy going on here. What a lovely place. Did you get the donkeys to be "guard animals"? I ask because I am thinking of getting goats, and the property they will have to go on is what we call "the back 40" meaning it is up at the end of the road, away from the house. I have read that donkeys can guard against predators, we have coyotes here, as well as the occasional bear. What kind of goats are you going to get, for meat? or milk? I want to make goat cheese and yogurt, for us and for the chickens. Isn't it fun?

thanks alot guys now I have that song "Jack and Diane" playing in my head now and it won't stop. I bet you guys can't remember "Duke of Earl," from l962. No fair if you hummed it from your cradle.

Sure Happy Chooks, no wonder you are so happy. Getting old isn't for wimps but I get by with some help from my friends (BYCers are the BEST) This forum always make me smile.

Whoops, sorry, thread hi-jacking. But to recover.. ummmm... I'd sing all these songs on the way UP to Cluckawalla Valley, if I was ever invited!

Dang, Michael and I had just gotten the song out of our heads and now this...

Yes, we purchased the donkeys for pets and guard animals. We got lucky as Jack hates coyotes! We are going to wait a little while before getting any other animals and see how this goes. The plan is to get full sized sheep and/or goats when we do. I just think the dwarfs would not survive the predators. I love the dwarf Nigerians but it is too scary. Plus, our fence is not little goat proof, just big goat proof, hopefully. Those little guys can, and will slip through a tiny opening.

UPDATE:

Diane arrived today and what a sweetheart she is. She and Jack were instant friends and followed each other everywhere the other went. We went for a long walk tonight with the donkeys on leads, me with Diane and Michael with Jack. It was fun. The only time they got a little dificult to handle was when one got too far away from the other. We'll keep working with them.

We had planned to keep them separated for a few days to get to know one another but they had a different plan.

They couldn't get two feet from each other.
