I'm just getting started with bantam and largefowl cochins but am getting some of the best hopefully. This is my lone 4 month old pullett and I need some more to go with her! I have already contacted Judy Gantt and plan on picking up some birds at Crossroads.
Lilcrow, do you have anything available cause I am in Ohio also,pm me if you do. ETA I just mapped it and I think you are less than 30 minutes away from me.

I saw a very good white frizzle last year get best featherleg at a show of over 1500 birds but it doesn't happen all that often. I think it is more about the quality/type of the bird rather than whether it is frizzle or smooth. Frizzle are accepted in the standard and are not frowned upon in any way. Fairs happen when many birds are not in best condition. Also I see kids showing birds that are only 4 months old against birds that are 14-18 months old in their prime. It is hard for a young bird to compete on an equal footing. Solid colors win more often than patterned birds. If he is really wanting to be competitive consider some birds from a breeder that has had some show success. Hatchery birds don't have a chance.

He wants to try an Ohio show in November with a hatchery bird. So appreciate your comments...expectations on winning will be low & we will focus on the experience only.

If you are located where I think you are you are only about 2 hours from the largest show of the year at Indianapolis in late Oct. If I am correct there will be in excess of 10,000 birds exhibited. In a better economy I would have said 12-13 thousand. There will be more breeds and varieties than you can imagine. There will be a table set up for Cochin International and that would be a good place to talk to knowledgeable breeders and show people about Cochins.

Super dumb question.

Bantam Mottled Cochins

Black Mottled. Blue Mottled.

Obviously you can show the black. Can you show the blue mottled? If so do they go under mottled or ????

Ihave a project pen working on developing blue mottled bantams. It consisted of two blue roosters. a few black mottles, and a few blue hens. Out of about 60 chicks I got a few blue mottle splits that I'll continue that project with, but I also got some "columbian/birchen" marked males in both a silver based and gold based on both black and on blue body colors. A few have colored feathers on the backs and/or sides. (Its looking like rain but I'll try for photos later). Neither the silver or golds are full like a normal birchen or columbian. Being that they are on dark bodies, I can't tell if its a birchen or a columbian factor. They are a bit attractive especially on the blue body and I might add yet another project pen if I can get a handle on what genes are involved. Interesting none of the hens show any of this coloration so I'm leaning toward a birchen influence. Thoughts?

Yes, just about 2 hours out. We will have to plan a short road trip and check this out.
