Cochin breeding, genetics, and showing

Pics
Ok - I've seen the reference to VH a few times now and I was wondering if someone can by chance show photo's showing the difference to the term. We have a lot of Cochins that we had ordered for breeding. If VH is not a trait that is desirable in Cochins, then we dont want this trait in our birds... or if I can post photos on if our current birds have that trait

I'd rather get it weeded out now rather than keep going with it for improving our current stock - I know these aren't great photos but these are a couple of our birds -- white ones there's (2) actual white & (2) White Splash, Blue Rooster & Partridge. We also have Buff hens & Blue hens that are not in this bunch yet. That "I" believe we have a pretty decent bunch to improve with - These girls just started laying, so they are still young

This is Blue one of the blue roosters we have.

Thank you
By the way you have a beautiful set up there.

Getting there - been slow process. Still have couple runs to complete tho - it's my mothers set up how she wanted - custom built her design. (4) 10x10 stalls (2)12x12 stalls , insulated brood/hatch room, store/tack room, milk room , office, bath/shower and workshop

Runs
400

Inside barn
400

Holy cow!! That is fantastic. Nicest set up I've ever seen. Just one thing I thought I'd mention, I can't see for sure, but it doesn't look like your runs are covered. You might want to put some chicken wire or some type of covering over the runs to protect from hawks and any aerial attacks.

In that pic they weren't - we had just finished the 2nd run in 80+ heat - did tops next day cuz the orpingtons could clear it anyway. Lol

I'm new to the cochin breed and I just purchased some mille fleur eggs. I was wondering what I would have to breed to my millies in order to get porcelain cochins.

I have owned one Black Cochin Bantam Rooster, called "Jap" because he was suppose to be a Black Japanese Bantam, but turned out to be a beautiful Cochin Bantam. he has been the only Cochin I owned for a long time and love him to death. Actually he is my favorite over all the other breeds I have. Not being able to control myself I have to pick him up daily just to scratch his neck, and watch him dance when I put him back down. He is also, 2nd to smallest towering over my Black Japanese Bantams. After watching him suffer being the smallest for so long, I gave in an ordered a 30 Cochin Bantam Chicks of various colors....So In a way I am new to Cochin Bantams, in a way I am not. I understand why they are so easy to fall in love with. I can sit and watch him for hours strut his stuff.....He's so funny....A little man with a Big Heart...He thinks he is 10 foot tall and Bullet Proof. But even then, the bigger roosters on the property just look at him and walk off. As if they don't want to hurt him, and they really could if they wanted too. But I try to keep only the most docile of breeds, and do not keep aggressive birds, so he's safe....

Poor thing, he did fly over the fence a few months back into a neighbors dog kennel, where a couple of beagles plucked every feather he had making him unrecognizable as a cochin and left 8 holes in his back and chest. I could not believe the heart of that little bird. Under all that stress he lived, any other bird would have died of shock. He didn't and has made a full recovery growing back all of his beautiful black feathers..

I'm glad to have found this thread and look forward to returning for advice on the breed and breeding genetics....Any advice on breeding for color and standard is greatly appreciated.

To start with, can anyone tell me where to find a list of genetic flaws, and pictures to refer to?

Thanks again

That's a wonderful story, hope the little guy stays away from trouble from now on.
