Cochin breeding, genetics, and showing

Pics
She is! I have no idea whether I could show her since I haven't seen a red before either. I bought her as a 6 week pullet labeled calico, but as her feathers developed, she grew into a clear mottled pattern.
WOW!! Very interesting. You can show anything, you just can't go any further than Variety. I wouldn't show her as a Red Mottled I don't think. I'd look into maybe Jubilee, not really sure. You'd need to go through the SOP and find the color name that fits.
She's VERY unusual.

Thanks! I will go through the handbook (I just ordered one) and see where she fits best. Talked today with Parker Padilla about what he recommends for her and he thinks I should show her as a mille fleur, or at least breed her to another mille because her red plumage would make suck a striking base for that.

I guess you could do that, but she is so striking, if she was mine and I had the space and energy, I'd try to breed to "fix" that color/pattern. You'd need to buddy up with a genetics expert to help you with that project if you were to take that on.

I think I will need to find a genetics expert to talk to. No matter what I decide to do with her

I am so please with my new baby! Purchased this darling from Parker Padilla in Gilroy, CA.

Yes! Finally got a photo of her relaxing that shows her form. I know she isn't a great example of conformation. Her hackles aren't full enough, and her tail is a bit too narrow. Feedback on her form would be helpful so I can learn more and know what to look for in a rooster to breed her to.

You will most likely have to do some test breedings with her. She appears to be a true Mottled, her feather pattern looks like it has the V or diamond shape tips that it should have. It would help to show pics of her from above, straight down to see her shape. From this picture, it looks like she has some stiff feathers in her cushion, so you would look for a bird with a very soft, full cushion, and a shorter, deeper head. Right off the top of my head, I would suggest a Mottled rooster to start with, see what you get, then take one of those cockerels back to this hen. Look for one of the genetics threads and see if you can get some serious help with this.
