Cochin breeding, genetics, and showing

Pics
as far as winning shows goes i have only seen a black or white bantam cochin win anything major at a show. if you have one of the other varieties then dont expect to win anything but just breed them and show them for the love of that breed and variety. if we dont show these other colors lots of people probably wont even know they exist but just dont get dissapointed if you dont win at a poultry show. i dont go to win i just go to show off my pretty birds

Pictures following. The pullet I bred to the Columbian is from a line of blacks that goes back over 50 years. I was told that the breeding would result in Birchen with incomplete lacing by a knowledgeable experienced breeder.

The pullet I used was out of a Best of show Black hen. I have made no brought in no new bloodline in the last 8 years.

well that's not a Black bird, thats a Birchen bird, birchen is dominant to just about everything like eb and Co, which is the genetic make up of Columbian..

The most common form or Columbian is eb (Partridge), the columbian pattern becomes much easier to single mate when eb is replaced with ewh (wheaton) however this is not availabl ein all breeds. the use of Silver laced or Silver Penciled (Silver Partridge) is the quickest route back to columbian as all the offspring result in columbian pattern, Columbian male over Wheaton Female also results in all columbian pullets and slightly golden columbian males.

When breeding for type any variety outcross will work, make your cross, run F1xF1 select for type and preferably some color or appaearnce of F1 color. Then Run F2xF2 selecting fo rtype and color. Make a Backcross for additional color in 1 pen and F2xF2 in another. The following generation take your BC1 x F3 select for color and type, then mate those selected offspring to each other. You may need to do this 2x to get where you want to be.

I disagree any parti-colored bird can be competitive and should be scored higher if of equal type based on the standard. Once these Parti-colored birds receive the attention of serious breeders and showmen you will see them placed properly. as it stands with most breeds black and white place higher because they are of better quality based on teh breed standard.

Hi all, I am new to this forum and Cochins, I have some Blues, the large size and was wondering how I could find out the breed standard .

I was thinking of doing State fair and maybe County fair for fun..

Hello all

I'm new to the Cochins and got some hatching eggs from a mixed pen of colours plus some pure lavenders. Hatched out a variety of cuckoos/mottles/buff etc

I do have two pullets that I am struggling to name the colour, I tried getting some answers in the what breed? section but I think I lucked out so I'm asking the experts! If anyone can help me that would be fab, also any suggestions of what colour boys to go with them would be great. Would a partridge roo be suitable?

Stupidly I took a photo against a light background so the colour doesn't show up great but they are a bright buff head and chest and then the darker colour is beige. Does Buff Fawn sound about right?!?

Thanks
