Cochin Thread!!!

Thank you! I'm just learning chickens, so I thought she was extra pretty. Nice to get the validation from you!
Here she is at 3 weeks.

(This was the 5 week shot.)

I got her and my 7 other girls from My Pet Chicken. I lost my Buff Silkie the second day, but so far (knock on wood) the rest of the girls have been healthy, no pecking, no weirdness. I watch like a hawk and read on here like I'm addicted.

We called her Miss Bitty White (Betty's been in the news a lot lately) but she acts much more like a Princess Buttercup to me. Betty is much more outgoing! She's the type of bird that graces you with her attention and you bow down to her buttery fluff. (Yes, still a little palest of pale yellow and wondering if she will actually be pure white some day.)

I got this batch as fertile eggs from Lynnrae Troples out of Pennsylvania - 8 eggs of the dozen she sent started developing, and ALL 8 of them hatched!

But, if you want some Columbians that are much better than mine, I suggest you talk to Tom (cochinman2005).

I did get in touch with Tom a few weeks ago (he actually doesn't live too far from me) but I REALLY wanted chicks that I could raise on my own and he doesn't sell chicks. :-( So I found some Standard Cochin chicks (3 weeks old) from someone who also didn't live too far from me, I just kind of "happened" upon them, and I am so happy I did! They may not be show quality, but I just couldn't love them more. I need to get some pics up. They're so funny, so nosey about what I'm doing even at this young age.

glad you found some.

I will! I hope that Coral Rose (Tissi's chick) will go broody next year but I don't think she will be old enough by then

She is growing beautifully and is so sweet! The only thing that is different from her mother is that she has a couple of white feathers on her neck. But that doesn't make her any less beautiful!

That's the same way I felt - I wanted to start by hatching chicks and watching them grow; feels like I'm learning more that way.

I got pictures of two of the pullets today - of the other three, two are almost solid white, and the younger one is in with that ornery little cockerel and she's pretty rough looking:

This is Bridgette:

And this is Darcy:

And just because it's a gorgeous picture, here's Beavis, one of the two mystery-colored boys that hatched out of a batch of Columbian eggs I bought...I posted him someplace else here on BYC, and the best guess was that he's Columbian x Partridge, but perhaps with some barring in his background...he's been molting out the Partridge-y colored feathers lately and turning more white:

Hey Taunton, Groveland here. Actually from the photo they all look like pullets, if any male would be the back right, but hard to tell from the photo. Funny, I've had excess females this year as well - yea, must be the warm weather we've had.
