Cochin Thread!!!

I have hatchery quality cochins, so will they breed fine as far as fertility?

Thanks,
You will probably have better fertility. Hatchery birds tend to have less underfluff, and it makes natural breeding much easier. I let my birds breed naturally, without cutting or plucking feathers, but in doing so fertility was low. I set over 15 dz eggs this year, and hatched 40 chicks.

I've noticed the last week or so when I let my birds out to free range my Cochin, Cinnamon whom I was thinking was a roo (never heard a crow, just really red in face) will stop in front of me or hubby and put his/her head down and butt in the air. I think I have an idea what it means... Has anyone's cochin or chicken for that matter done that before?

i had one girl that would do that, but not anyone else yet... and i tend to think 'he' is a 'she'. LOL the comb gets bigger and redder just before they start to lay. i've got a pullet everyone kept telling me is a roo, well that 'roo' just started laying eggs... so..

to them. LOL my (un)white cochin is definitely a SHE!. and she's got company. some 'mystery' cochin eggs i got, 2 just hatched out, and they're white too! for now... 8)

Hey All, i hope you are doing well with the heat. It is freezing here and just passed the middle of winter.

Here is a pick of Dora, a black pekin/cochin

And my first "Stink eye" pic from her friend Big Red

i love how their faces can go from a soft grey to almost bright red. My girl big red is the top of the pecking order, and keeps my 4 month standard roo away from the other girls. At the firt sign of trouble that standard is gone!

well, crossing fingers here that apco gets the power back online soon... we had a heck of a storm blow thru last night downing trees and power lines all over the place. but *knock on wood* we've got everything (essentials at least) running on generator power. had a few cochins hatch during the storm, including a *light* mille fleur, a white, a black, and 2 from my mill pen.

I've always felt in my heart that he is a she and the same with my other chickens and I've been right about their sex, which is surprising being a first time chicken owner. BUT for many years I've researched and researched everything I could on chickens before committing to owning them. (Really they own me.) LOL

OK long story short My wife Mary was got some Cochin chicks for her birthday and they are only 3 or 4 days old today.
We are trying to figure out which she wants to keep and which may go once they grow a bit, everything she has is either in pairs or trios LOL
She got 3 little black ones and 4 little beighish ones so we are wondering what to expect as they progress and what the sexes are so she knows who to wach and who may be staying for ever

Those not chosen are going to be grown a bit and will go to our grand kids.
I saw something around here somewhere about sexing day old or a few day old Bantom Cochins by wing feathers but I cant find it again?
If any one could help with this it would be appreciated.
Here are some pics of the teeny tinny little fluff balls.

We also took wing feather shoots incase you could help give us an idea on the sex ratio
