Cochin Thread!!!

Was wondering if anyone knows of Cochins International having a meet of somekind at the Lucasville show this October 6-7. Or also, if anyone knows of another all Cochins show in th works?

I don't know of any such show in the works. I would be interested but wonder if it is a reality to think we can get enough birds in one place to have a show worthy of the breed. We only get about 100 Bantams and almost 50 LF at a CI Western National show. I would not need much encouragement to participate in such an event if within a 10 hr drive of home which for me is from Colorado to Ohio E/W or Minnesota/Wisconsin to Arkansas/Tennessee/Oklahoma N/S

Coming up on 2 weeks of temperatures over 100 now here in southern indiana. Everybody's hanging in there. Fresh water every chance I can, adding vitamins and electrolytes to their water. Watermelon treats help too. The coop is mostly in the shade but the west side gets the really late afternoon sun so I bought a roll of wicker ( like a blind ) and layed it over top of their pens so it gives them some shade. they seem to enjoy it.
Hope everyone is staying as cool as they can~

Quote: The Cochins International BOD is very hard at work on a lot of new projects, discussion of an All-Cochin Show is just one of many topics. But as you can imagine, there are many factors to consider, including timing, logistics, cost, etc. If something can be worked out, it most likely wouldn't be until late 2013 or 2014.

Topics at the top of the list, including the upcoming elections, is the 2012 Eastern National - the first weekend of November in Frederick, Maryland.

If you want to catch the eye of the CI Board of Directors, or read more of official Club activities, I would highly recommend posting on the CI Forum, or bookmarking the CI Website. You are always encouraged to directly contact Linda or any of the Directors with your comments and suggestions. They are YOUR representatives, and are eager to hear your ideas and talk Cochin.

Activities for the 2012 Eastern National are currently being discussed - I've already emailed them with some of my suggestions for seminars, etc that I think would be a nice complement to the show. What they do with my suggestions is up to them, but at least I feel like I'm participating and contributing, and voicing my opinion as to the direction I'd like to see the Club move in the future.

I know everyone's available time is stretched thin, but please take a few moments to contact your District Director - even if it's just to give them a pat on the back and tell them they are appreciated. Send them your suggestions - they are not mind readers. Submit articles for the Newsletter. Submit articles/photos for the Website. Volunteer to help at the show - there is so much to do. You don't have to volunteer for the entire day! An hour here or there is ALWAYS welcome.

Sorry - I'll get back down off my soapbox now.

(And please - As I'm sure you can tell, you DO NOT want to get me started on Voter Apathy with the elections coming up this November!)

Same here in Northern Indiana.
We have two fans running up against the run even though it's mostly in the shade as well. Lots of water for the babies and things they can hide under.
We can't replace the water as much as we'd like to now that we are under water conservation due to the drought. We need some rain so bad!

The 2 past nights it has rained and we still end up runing our well dry. It has helped the crops though. We only can hope for more.

I hope we all get some! It's much needed, that's for sure. We had a neighbor who had their well run dry and they had to go 180 feet to find more. Last night, the neighbor next door got sand in their tub water.

Hope that's not a sign of what is coming. I guess if nothing else, I do have a river in the backyard to bathe in if I get too gross.

lol i've been without power since this time last friday... the horse's water trough is starting to look inviting. and it's warmer than what comes out of our well (static level at 220' down). not too worried about it going dry, just having power to run the pump... we can either run the well, or computers and a/c... nevermind the water heater. that's more than our gennie will do.

tho it is warm enough outside, maybe a cold shower out in the yard, at the hottest part of the day would work. LOL

Yeah water has not been a problem down here you can have some of what we had, out of 4 weeks it was only dry enough for me to work 10 days then the plant shut down for the week of the 4th so 5 weeks with little work mainly due to flooding and rains, We were in a drought too but as they say "when it rains it pours" but we are used to 80's and 90's most of the year and having to cool down most of the time.

I have an injured and traumatized cochin. It's breaking my heart. She's only about 6 weeks old.
A few days ago my small dog went after a loose small bird, I thought there was only one out but apparently this cochin was outside, too.
She is sitting still today like a little stuffed animal and hiding under things. My husband and I have moved her out of our way today several times. She doesn't even try to get away from us, she just holds her wing. Her left wing looks bruised but I don't see a break.

I got a container with water and began to just put some cold water over her. (It is 112 here today) I rubbed her wing a little and got off the yucky stuff where it looks like my dog may have had it in her mouth and sat in the yard with her while she dried. It really didn't help her feel any better.

I worry for her and wonder if I should bring her inside. Any advice?
