Cochin Thread!!!

I have an injured and traumatized cochin. It's breaking my heart. She's only about 6 weeks old.
A few days ago my small dog went after a loose small bird, I thought there was only one out but apparently this cochin was outside, too.
She is sitting still today like a little stuffed animal and hiding under things. My husband and I have moved her out of our way today several times. She doesn't even try to get away from us, she just holds her wing. Her left wing looks bruised but I don't see a break.

I got a container with water and began to just put some cold water over her. (It is 112 here today) I rubbed her wing a little and got off the yucky stuff where it looks like my dog may have had it in her mouth and sat in the yard with her while she dried. It really didn't help her feel any better.

I worry for her and wonder if I should bring her inside. Any advice?
i would bring her in and put her in a hospital cage, crate, or something along those lines, to keep her isolated from others, with easy access to food and water. if she's going to heal that's her best bet. you'll know when she's ready to go back outside because she'll start acting like a chicken again, rather than a 'stuffed animal'. but even when she starts acting normal again i'd still give her an extra day or 3 of vacation. i made the mistake of letting my big guy back out after a bout of bacterial pneumonia, too soon. within an hour he was puffing and wheezing again. but 2 more days of treatment and he was beating down the doors. LOL

Gonna hit on a couple posts, lol. The reason I asked about an all Cochins show is because I know several years ago(5-7) there was such in Eastern TN. I didnt get to attend, and I hated that i couldnt, was hoping to have that chance again.

As far as heat, it is H-O-T-T here too. Been in triple digits for 8 days straight here, got some reliefe from rain showers a couple days, but only for a while. Last day it rained it got sooooo muggy and sticky outside before dark, it was horrible. But my coop is insutaled and under mature shade trees, and I have all windows open with a fan in there, and it has been staying pretty cool in there, at least cooler than outside the coop. Actually had a few birds get some heat sickness, it was the smaller ones. Didnt get lethargic or really bad, just kind of moped around for a couple days. Added some sugar to the water to try and help prevent anything worse from happening. But, after Saturday, we are "supposed to get a break" from the heat, and have some good rain and cooler temps. I think mid to upper 80's is much nicer than 100+, any day! Lol.

Also on the bird above that is injured, I dont have alot of info to give, but one thing I would make sure of is that she doesnt get chilled. She is probably in shock, and may be for some time, and if her body temp gets to low it could be fatal. Just keep her in a place where she can stay cool and not overheat, but I wouldnt let her stay indoors under air conditioning either, that may also make her more prone to illness or disease, or weaken her immune system just enough to cause problems. Hope she gets better. And I couldnt help but notice, she also has Silkie feathering. Very cool.

These 5, are from a buff(?) orange cochin and smooth frizzle bantam rooster. I hatched these in an incubator, first time Ive ever done that so it was pretty great experience. 8 days after I started incubating these the original hen went broody so I left her with 4 of her eggs. Anyway, its a long story but my main question was, do you or anyone else have any ideas of what colours these will be as adults? Particularly the little dark one who now seems to have beautifully patterned wings and almost black elsewhere except for her patterned head. Thanks for any help.

What was the Roosters color? I don't know what they will become but they are good healthy looking chicks. Enjoy them

Thanks for the reply, the Rooster (Oliver) is showing in the background here. Old photo so he has outlived that whole bunch of girls with him. I wanted to breed again from him because he has an excellent nature and is extremely "snake smart" which is my biggest problem here.

One of the chicks that hatched for me today is bare on one entire backside. I'll get some pics as soon as he dries off - he seems fine other than one bare naked side. Has anyone experienced this? I'm hoping the feathers will grow in. Pictures late tonight or tomorrow morning.

How strange, Ive never heard of that. Looking forward to seeing pic. Just looked at your album, the rosster is gorgeous. Im new to cochins altho have had frizzles for awhile. What is the official colour of your rooster? Any predictions on the colours that mine might become? I realise it is impatient & I can wait & see but they are getting such patterns on their wings, it is really interesting. I hatched 5 in inc, & hen hatched 4, 8 days later & then "stole" all of mine when I took them to the coop for a visit.Only 7 showing here. But all 9 doing fine.

does anyone have any insight as to what color this cockerel is? he is about 2 months old in this picture. also, is this a recognized color for showing? I'm new to the bantam cochins. thanks

Gosh they really are not at their best at this teenage age are they? Is this one definately a Roo, such a small crest but I am new to cochins
