Cochin Thread!!!

Thanks Bo. I finally have some chicks from him and the pullet I had at Shawnee last Dec. Very typey, but too young for this year. Should be good for next year depending on when they molt. Not sure when they'll do that having hatched in July.

Are you having a milder summer this year?

The Starks said to say hi. Any chance you might make the Four Corners show this year?
Yes, the summer has been milder and wetter for our part of the state we actually only had about 10 or 11 days of 100+ temperatures in August and we have had a rather hot week this past first week of September but the cooler weather is on the way.
I sure miss Gene and Bert, they are a great couple and we enjoy
their company so much. Please tell them we said hi and to send us a catalog and maybe, just maybe we'll be able to come out. I love that part of the world and the great people of the Four Corners.
Blessings, Bo

I have a red rooster pic is on my page he a deeep red

I looked at your profile and the pics you have there, and I didnt see any Red Cochins, in any of the albums? Also, you posted a few days ago regarding the colors of your birds, and I also checked those pictures out and didnt see any Cochins that looked to be pure colors, they all look to be mixes. I did see a rooster that was Partridge, maybe this is what your refering to as Red? He looks pure, but of hatchery stock. They all look to be pure bred, just no any pure variety I recognize, or that the ABA or APA would recognize.

ok, forgive the bad pic, i managed to find them all together in the corner of the coop on the dirt floor... not the greatest of photo settings.

here are 3 cockerels i'm trying to decide on, and 1 pullet to go with the pick cockerel.

would you say these were buff columbian? red columbian? (a couple are blue buff/red/?) these came from my mille fleur pen, somewhat accidentally, but I'm thinking i may start a new pen for them. suggestions?

she does have some of the hackle lacing, it's just not very visible from this angle... she's the smart one. snuggles up to the biggest roo for protection from the 'witchy' hens. LOL

forgot to mention, they all hatched around the middle/end of June.

Many have started their Mille project with a Buff Columbian so I am guessing that is what you have. What factors are making it show now is unknown. If they were mine I would look at type when deciding which to keep. If you wanted a "Red " project keep the reddest one. If Buff Columbian then the better buff one. Other factors would be eye color, wing pattern, least shafting, ect. Enjoy.

I agree with Craig - most likely from the buff columbian background in many MF projects. I too got a red Pullet this year. I suspect that she is is buff with mahogany added in. As I have just the one I'll keep her around to be used to redden my eWh line of MF that I'm working on. If I get any more, I may think about building black tailed reds as yet another project as this variety also needs someone to work on it. I think I have the Db genes around to give it a shot. In the meantime she will, I think, help redden the lighter MF by adding a dose of mahogany.

the roo is mille fleur, the hens are blue partridge split mille fleur. so the buff columbian chicks are simply those not getting the mottled gene. the roo is a bit darker red, so i tend to think that came from his side.

the funny part is, i've gotten 4 bc, about 20 mille fleur. so i was surprised to find the bc this last hatch. then again, one hen was broody, so these eggs came from the unbroody girl primarily. now if i could figure which hen it was, I'd maybe pair her up differently. maybe once i get a partridge roo, they may go to that pen exclusively.

this is my mille roo. he's gotten some better mottling with his recent moulting.
and the girls... (with an assortment of chicks)

Good news! I think...

I picked up a black bantam Cochin hen for my Chocolate project. She isn't the best, BQ only. But, it's a start. I also have one from a MFC project that is pure black w/ no white or red leakage anywhere. She has very nice type, so I technically have 2 girls now! Sadly, the one I got today came with bad lice. I bathed her, blow dried her and treated her with Ivermectrin.

Next year I will get some good SQ girls from John Burgess and maybe Tom if we can ever catch up with each other.

Pics to come later.
