Cochin Thread!!!

This has been a horrible week for me, yesterday I had to put down my wonderful, sweet Jack. He started acting funny last week, could'nt keep his balance, seemed to have trouble walking, falling forward on his toes. I separated him, rotated medicines, kept him warm, put him out in the sunshine in the grass. I tried everything I could think of and can not figure out why a completely healthy 1 1/2 year old bird would go down like this. This is devastating to me and although I have several chicks from Jack, I have not one that looks anything like him.
I bought Jack at the Crossroads show last year, after I bought him, I walked around with him and he fell asleep in my arms. He was sweet, sweet to the hens and loved to talk to me every morning. He got excited at breakfast and treat time. His coloring was gorgeous and I hope and pray someday that out of his offspring; I will find another Jack~

Twyla, I am SOOOO sorry!!!

shafting is when a feather has a different color shaft than the vane (body) of the feather.

here's a good pic of a bird with obvious shafting in the breast and wing areas, to give you an idea. sorry, not a cochin. but dorkings are supposed to have shafting, so it's easy to show.
her hackle feathers are not shafted, but laced.

I wanted to reply about shafting earlier but had work outside that had to be done. This is a reply by someone else about 5 months ago about shafting and I can not say any better. If there are still questions please ask.

yes thank you very much but he looks just like my mottled houdan accept he only has in on his belly o and also has some black and white wing feathers also. someone said the mottled cochins get more mottled as they grow up so maybe mine will etheir way i like black or mottled but if its the shafting what will happen if i breed him to a black?

Alright everyone... My first black bantam Cochin hen and the black pullet from what is supposed to be offspring from MFC project flock! She has no leakage or white, so I'm going to use her and see what I get until I can get another hen or two next year.

The Pullet:

Not very flattering pictures since my crappy camera messes up natural colors and she was freaking out over the cat rubbing on my legs.

And now the new hen I got over the weekend:

She may not be the best and she may have had lice, but for $10, I am thrilled with her! She looks a little crow headed to me... I should have gotten the other nicer one, too... Hindsight, you know,

So, I am hoping to have my first generation of chocolate bantam Cochins early 2013!

Thank you, Lynne!
Thanks to everyone posting pictures and education us to the proper type, too! Like I said, she isn't perfect, but out of the 3 that I had to pick from, she was the nicest. The other one wasn't bad, but I opted against a 2nd on that may not give me the type or leg feathering I wanted. The other one was a bit sparse in leg feathering, but it looked like it was because of breakage/free ranging.
