Cochin Thread!!!

In addition to the accurate info you've received, I would suggest that you not include your whites in the self-blue program you are starting. I don't know what you would get, but it would not be of any use in breeding self-blues and would only serve to muddle things.
Thanks, i wont, as mentioned the type of the self blues is bad.not sure about the standards here for beak colour, but neither of my new bantams have good cochin type. i am going to breed to black, then with the f1 splits, back to the self blue male. Just hope my thoughts are right and it is a boy, but someone did point out earlier on this thread that the yellow beak was a boy, and being new to this i trust all of your opinions a lot.

Hello Everyone!!! Here are a few pics of my Partridge and white Cochins, I just LOVE them

Thank you - can you give me a reason as to what is wrong with his colour? Looking to learn. He is constantly changing

Probably Partridge would be the closest accurate description. Color is not quite right and yet a very good looking bird.
I would agree with Craig on this. He looks good, but color is not quite there. He has some leakage in his fluff, below his wing, and on around to his chest and near his vent(although I suspect this will moult out as he matures), and IMHO he looks a little to orange, should be a deeper red throughout. I also noticed that the hen you posted a pic of has good color, but her cushion is..well its not a cushion. Cochins arent supposed to have tails, they are supposed to have a cushion. The feathers should be short and the tail rounded like a ball with no feathers sticking out. But, that is something that can be worked on, you have a good color going, now you just need to tweak the type a little and you should be good to go. :)

I agree on the girl's type Mr. Ree. Maybe they will help each other out, because he seems to have a nice cushion going - and her a nice colour. The picture washes out his colour a bit, but shows his type - which is why I posted. Here is a picture from last week. Deeper colouring.

I do see what you mean about the tooch area and under the wing. Thanks for explaining! I do notice that standard cochins have more of a tail look to them here- even at the shows I attend. There are only a few lines of them going around here :( Mostly buff. ETA: Picture showing the little cushion my hen has.

I have to say, its not just there, here in the states a lot of birds dont have the full round cushion they should have. But in the last few years, there has been a drastic change in that area with a lot of breeders. I know a few here on this site, and that have posted in this very thread who have the best typed LF Cochins I have ever seen. I think the pair you have is a very good start, just minor things to correct, just like anyone else. Good luck with them! :)

So, what all colors have the red and orange heads and shoulders? Those are my absolute favorites. One of the Roos at the breeder we got our Cochins from was huge and had this beautiful dark orange head.

Those arent Blue, they are Self Blue which is entirely different variety.

~Casey
Isn't self blue also known as lavender?

I believe in the USA in the SOP it is called self blue. I think lavender is the same color but for cochins in the SOP it is self blue. Is your SOP the same as ours? Just one of those idiosincreties~some breeds the variety is lavender, others is self blue.

I love your LF partridge. That hen really looks gigantic with those tiny birds by her. I love the roos eyes too with the nice brow.

MommaforSix~I think your bantam partridge cochins are very pretty too. I love that color.

Ashdoes~far as I know the partridge is the color that has the red head isnt it?
