Cochin Thread!!!

Hello fellow Cochin lovers! This is my first time posting on this thread, I just have some questions. I have a trio of bantam cochins. The rooster is a frizzled lavender splash. Hen #1 is a straight feathered lavender splash, not sure if she has a recessive frizzled gene or not, or if frizzling is even recessive...and Hen #2 is a glossy black, also straight feathered. Unfortunately, Hen #2 seems to have become egg bound and I'm afraid I have done all I can do for her :'( Not sure if she will make it or not, and even if she does, I don't think I'll be breeding her because those kind of problems tend to be hereditary right? Anyway, I plan on acquiring another straight feathered black hen for breeding purposes next Spring, and my main question is what all possibilities are there in breeding this trio? Can you get black if you breed lav splash to lav splash? What are the odds of getting frizzle babies? Thanks guys!

First of all, there is no such variety as Lavender Splash, its more than likely just Splash. If you breed him to the other Splash, you will get only Splash, and they will probably be diluted as compared to the parents. If you were to breed him to a Black, you will get Blue. And as far as frizzling goes, everyone always wants to throw the 50/50 numbers out there, and in my experience that is not correct. You will get some frizzles, but that number can vary greatly. I would say that you will get about 30% frizzles and 70% smooth birds. This isnt always true, but its a little more accurate than 50/50.

Just to give you an idea, I hatched close to 75 birds this year, and I ended up with less than a dz frizzles. These werent all hatched at the same time, I had a few different hatches this year. Biggest hatch was 28 at once, and of them I got 5 frizzles from that group.

Can you folks tell me if this is a Red-Brown Cochin? I picked her up yesterday evening from a lady that was selling her as a Black Copper Marans. I already have two Marans and they look a lot different from this girl (no lacing on the chest and no feathering on the middle toes) but I brought her home anyway because I thought she was pretty. She turns out to be quite the character and now I'm just trying to figure out her breed. Any info would be great. Thanks!

First - Let me welcome you our little Cochin Thread.
Second - Best of luck to your hen - I hope she makes it.
Third - You do NOT have a Lavender Splash. Let me try and explain. But first things first. The proper terminology for a "Lavender" bird is Self-Blue. Lavender (lav) is merely the name of the gene. As Self-Blue birds breed true, Splash variaions do no occur. Splash variations only occur when your birds carry the (Andalusian) Blue gene.

We will be able to help more if you can post photos.

Agree that it is either splash or self blue. Most likely splash as you said.

I'm not familiar with Copper Marans, so I don't know what their coloring should look like. Brown Red would certainly come closest to her in Cochin Varieties. But if she is Cochin, she is not a purebred Cochin. Maybe she's a Maran/Cochin cross???

Thanks for your input guys! These are my first cochins so I didn't know about the color names, sorry!
This is the black pullet, 27 weeks old, now egg bound :( I just took this a few days ago and she was fine...

This is the rooster, about 1.5 years old.

I don't have one of the splash pullet. I'll try to get one later today, but besides not being frizzled she has a very similar pattern to the rooster.

I was thinking that too Gail. Her color looks good, as far as Brown Red goes, but her type just doesnt scream Cochin. Another thing that threw me off, was her comb and wattles, they look huge as compared to her overall size, much like a laying hen.

Edit: Also noticed after posting that she has some shafting on her breast and over her shoulder.

Gail I thought of you last night when I saw the news there was snow in Colorado! There is some snow in Northern Minnesota but not here yet. We may have flurries tonight. Hard freeze tomorrow night. Kinda snapped me to attention and thinking I better get things done outside while the gettins' good. :D

She looks like a good black pullet - even though its not the best picture - I like what I see - she seems to have good substance. I hope you can save her if she is indeed egg bound.

The rooster is definitely a Splash - Not Self-Blue(Lavender). Did he just come out of a molt? Something just doesn't seem/look right with his feathers. Casey is our resident Frizzle expert. He just doesn't look frizzle to me. And just as Casey noted on the Brown Red hen above that we were discussing, his comb/wattles/ear lobes seem all out of proportion.
