Mottled Cochins Bantam cockerels

I have several mottled cochin bantam cockerels to sell. They are 5-6 months old. I have bred mottleds for 20+ years and am a Master Breeder in Cochins International. Price is $40 and up. I may have some pullets later in the winter. Will deliver to Central IN show or to Columbus OH. Email or PM me. Thanks! MATT

Hello all,

i have a quick question with regards to my current broody. The mom has been an absolute trooper so far, sitting through huge thunderstorms and heavy rain (under cover of course).
She has been sitting on her eggs for two weeks now, so if the chicks hatch they will be due next weekend. Our electricity isnt stable enough for me to have an incubator or broody box with a light, so i am letting the broody do it all I moved her down from the egg box before i put fertilised eggs under her, to underneath another coop i built, will post pics later.
I built a run attached to this coop for a couple of baby self blues a while ago.
I am planning on moving the self blues out, and locking the new momma and babies into the new run and coop. Apart from the obvious considerations (Water and food safety for the new chicks) is there anything else i need to consider for my first time mom and her chicks? I would assume that if I let her raise them that she would do a better job then me.

It is the middle of summer here. What about pasty butt or bullying? Is it best to section her and her chicks off for a few weeks?

I know that chickens coped fine without humans interfering, but I would hate to disappoint her by leaving something out, and want to give her the best chance possible of raising the chicks. These are my first chickens, and the mom's first chicks, and i want to get it right.

Andy

Are either of those shows very large? Either of them would be about a 5-6 hour drive for me, so I would want it to be worthwhile and not only have 10-20 bantam cochins. I was dissapointed that the show in Birch Run did not have a single mottled cochin. I guess I won't have much competition. :(

Last I heard was that Lebanon(Central IN) has 2090 birds entered of which almost 800 are Jr. birds. Columbus will probably have 6000+ birds. It is the largest show in the US except for the few years there was a Crossroads show of over 10,000 birds. If you want a bird from Matt please contact him before driving 5-6 hrs.. He might only take presold birds to the shows.

This sounds like an excellent opportunity. I am a converted believer in buying the best quality cochins possible. And the price is reasonable. I have spent a lot of money on second hand cochins and a lot on feed and all I have to show for it is second hand cochins and discouragement.. Where as I would have been much better off investing in good quality birds to begin with.

Actually the price is more than reasonable for what you would be getting, Matt is an exceptional breeder and as he says, he is a Master Breeder which says plenty.

Actually you could probably do a better job raising them, hens can't be beat for incubating, but humans usually do much better raising them. If you do leave them with her, I'd keep her locked away from the flock, except for the rooster - they are usually very good with babies. First time mamas don't always know how to protect their young.

You are so correct. A lesson learned that each of us has to learn on our own.

The bad part, unfortunately something again we have all done, is to repeat the process several times until we settle in on our favorite Breed AND Variety. I started out spending a lot of money every couple of years on my new "Breed du Jour". Then, when I finally settled in with Bantam Cochins, I went thru a couple of different "Varieties du Jour" until I settled in on Golden Laced.

Just some of what I've had over the past 10 years (all Bantams)
Assorted Silkies - Bearded and Non-Bearded
Salmon Faverolles
Buff Ameraucanas
Silver Laced Polish
Sultans
Frizzle Cochins
Columbian Cochins
Mille Fleur Cochins

What made you decide to go with golden laced after raising the other types of cochins?
