Cochin Thread!!!

Ok, I feel extremely stupid asking this question but what color eggs do Cochin bantams really lay? Breed standard says brown but when I do a search on Google, I also find white eggs that are claimed to be Cochin eggs?
How much do the egg colors vary?

For next year, I want to order some hatching eggs and have NICE Cochin bantams. Right now I have 3 that really don't look like much of anything. That's ok. They were my first 3 Cochins and I love them dearly. Especially my partridge girl Lucille.

I like the birds Lucky Pickens Farm has. Found her on Facebook. I like the Columbians and her Blue Calicos. Has anyone done business with her and what is the quality of her birds? Hopefully I'm not throwing anyone under the bus here (possibly myself) or insulting anyone!?
I would die to have a nice Columbian for sure! But if I'm going to invest my time and money in more hatching eggs, I want to know I'm getting GOOD ones. Or at least, I want to know I have a good chance of getting good ones. I got some nice Silkies growing. Next on list are the Cochins for next year.

Are there any other Columbian and Blue Calico breeders around that you Cochin enthusiasts would recommend?

I have bought eggs from Roslyn at LuckyPickens. She does the best job of packaging of anyone I have bought eggs from and I have bought a lot of eggs. I have found her birds to be pretty good. I only have one of hers left unfortunatley due to selling everything I had to a move. I have gotten EXCELLENT hatch rates with her eggs. Most of them have been fairly typey.

There are several people I wouldn't buy from again due to their packaging and low or no hatchings.

I have also bought eggs from Dick Horstman and I had a Great Hatch rate from him! I also have a few good looking birds from him. Not sure that they are show quality but definately something to work with.

I have a question for anyone who may know the answer, in my Red breeding project I plan to use Black to improve type. I was wondering if a Black bird with excellent type, with some leakage would be something worth using? Or would the leakage set me back or hinder gaining progress of any kind?

if your goal is red, then blacks with leakage are probably going to be expected and i would use whatever best type you've got. since the black is dominant, it may be hiding a whole host of other color varieties tho. maybe you'll find some blacktailed red in the mix LOL but yes i'd use leakage birds if i'm wanting red specifically.

IMO the mahogany causes leakage problems in a variety of other breeds/varieties. including the silver grey dorking... if you outcross to a dark red (aka mahogany) the silver cockerels that result (f2-f3) have problems with leakage on the wings/shoulders... breeding back to a red results in some mahogany chicks usually.

OK - question for the experts - My baby LF Cochin chicks were hatched out on 8/14/12 making them 10 weeks old today. I also have 12 adult LF Cochins 3 years old. Today I walked into my coop and this egg laid on the floor. Is it possible one of the 10 week old LF cochins laid this egg or is something going on with my adults? To show you the size difference I placed the egg next to one of the regular LF eggs I get everyday. Anyone know?
