Cochin Thread!!!

OK - question for the experts - My baby LF Cochin chicks were hatched out on 8/14/12 making them 10 weeks old today. I also have 12 adult LF Cochins 3 years old. Today I walked into my coop and this egg laid on the floor. Is it possible one of the 10 week old LF cochins laid this egg or is something going on with my adults? To show you the size difference I placed the egg next to one of the regular LF eggs I get everyday. Anyone know?

There is no way the 10 week old chicks laid that egg. Either a friend or mother nature is playing a trick on you.

Can't be a person. I live in a very rural area and I check my chickens several times a day. It was not there in the morning and several hours later when I checked in on them it was on the floor.
Could one of the LF Cochins produce something so small?

This looks to be a 'runt egg', as I call them. I notice older hens who are done laying for the season, or during moult will often lay these smaller eggs. I dont think it is physically possible for a 10 week old bird to lay an egg, so whatever the situation you can snip that one from the list.

if your goal is red, then blacks with leakage are probably going to be expected and i would use whatever best type you've got. since the black is dominant, it may be hiding a whole host of other color varieties tho. maybe you'll find some blacktailed red in the mix LOL but yes i'd use leakage birds if i'm wanting red specifically.

IMO the mahogany causes leakage problems in a variety of other breeds/varieties. including the silver grey dorking... if you outcross to a dark red (aka mahogany) the silver cockerels that result (f2-f3) have problems with leakage on the wings/shoulders... breeding back to a red results in some mahogany chicks usually.

I know how to do it, and what I will end up with, the f1's will more than likely resemble a BR. My question isnt wether or not I should use them after breeding back to Black, my question was could a Black bird with leakage be used in the initial breeding of Black and Red. I ended up with a few birds that are very dark Red, which I believe will be my best breeders for this project. I know several breeders who sometimes end up with birds with leakage (normally a cull), but was thinking that the leakage wouldnt matter if crossing back to Red, as long as the bird came from a pure line of Blacks. Just wasnt sure the leakage wouldnt cause issues down the road a bit.

i mis understood sorry... depends what color is leaking i would guess... if it's a brassy color leakage, then maybe not, if it's red leakage, sure why not

She's hanging in there, the swelling in her wattles has gone down slightly, she's still eating very well ( always the 1st one at the feeder) she comes running to me when she sees me. The antibiotics seem to be helping. I still have no idea what is causing the swelling. I need to get a picture so everyone can see what's going on with her. Maybe someone knows what this is!
