Cochin Thread!!!

Here are most of the bantam cochins at the Ohio Nationals. You may want to click on the cog button and change it to 720 HD, not sure why it defaults to such a low resolution. New to taking videos and using youtube... Bleh it only loaded the first bit, let me see if I can fix it...

Oh Pooh . . . We're blocked from youtube at work. Gee . . . I wonder why???

I'll watch it first thing when I get home tonight.

I wasn't going to use Jack Jr. on Splash hens. I was going to breed him to the Blue Mottled pullet. Mandy suggested I use Blue Mottled to help w/type. I don't want to hatch blues, I want to hatch good Splash. So I guess I need a Black hen? But again, I don't want to hatch blue. ?

We all know you want to raise good Splash. Mandy is correct about improving type with the mottled and I also believe that I was correct in that Mottled color changes every molt and always gets lighter. How does that help you long term? What I don't understand is how you are going to do it without hatching blues. I know you have seen this chart at least 100 times. Tell me how it will work and how will hatch only 'good' Splash without hatching Blues. I see no way to get quality Splash without hatching 50% Blues.

Blue to Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Splash, 25% Black
Splash to Blue = 50% Blue, 50% Splash
Splash to Black = 100% Blue
Splash to Splash = 100% Splash
Blue to Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
Black to Black = 100% Black

Took photos of some cochins at the Ohio Nationals this weekend. The LF black cochin was the Grand Champion, and white bantam was Champion Featherleg. I learned a lot, got some nice birds and had a great time! I'll have a video of the other bantam cochins in the show up in a little while and will post when it is finished loading.

Awesome pictures!
Congrats to the winners!

Does the white girl belong to Annamay?

GRAND CHAMPION of the show was the Black LF Cockerel by Tom (cochinman2005) and Sandra Roebuck!!
The White Bantam also took Champion Featherleg, and is by Robert Hardina.
Mandy (thecochincoop) won Champion AOV Bantam with a Blue Mottled.

Congratulations to Everyone!!

Ok,,, So been waiting to hear from Craig about the show in Ohio... Hmmmm
I would love hear your storys! How did you do at the show?

I took 9 birds in 4 varieties. My Black Cock got 5 in Class, the Buff Columbian had no competiton so a 1(BV) doesn't mean much, the Partridge Cock was 1(BV) out of 6. I ended up buying the hen that was RV to have something to breed him to. The carnage in August left me with no Partridge hens and only a few pullets growing out that are a complete unknown. I also took 6 Columbians and no one showed any against these so they did OK by default. Tom brought me 2 trios of Buff Columbians that will let me grow out BC next year.

What did I learn? I need to hatch more and better if I want to better compete at this level. I need to let them grow out further and do a better job of looking at the whole bird rather than what I bred for that year. Whether that be wings, eye color, type, feather width or pattern. I am sure I forgot something so if you still have questions please ask.

This show has incredible competition. Cochins did well as a breed. Ch feather leg was a white hen and Toms LF Black was Champion of the show. Lots to see. Tom did a Jr showmanship for CI kids and I saw table top judging of Seramas. Interesting but not for me! I don't want the judge to know who brings the bird to the table for judging. 5500+ entered and probably well over 1000 in the sale area makes for a lot to take in. Got to talk with friends and meet some people that I have only read about or sent emails to. Picked up my calenders.

This was the sale area. Lots to be had and some to avoid!

From about the center back towards the traders row sale area.

this is the view toward the Bantams and Champion row. I really did not get it all in 2 pictures. Juniors on the far side also. The Jr show had Lots of quality birds in it of many breeds. Bantams double stacked to get them all in.
