Cochin Thread!!!

Hi there, I was wondering if you could help me. I picked up 7 mixed chicks yesterday from a local breeder. They're all purebred, but because I wasn't fussed what breeds I got, he just grabbed the best looking 7 from the bator as quickly as possible (still others hatching in there). I asked him what he thought I had in there, and from a quick peek in the top of the box, he thought there was an Australorp... When I had a better look after introducing them to my broody, the black chick has feathered feet and seems noticably smaller than the other chicks. Now I'm wondering if it's not a bantam cochin? Wdyt? (thanks so much!)
He sure looks like a cochin to me! Could be a Black or possibly Mottled.

Hi all,
I was thinking of getting a bantam (or large fowl possibly) cochin! Can I have some info on them?? pros and cons? egg production? temperament? Climate tolerance?? Thanks!
My thoughts on the breed is that I love them. Egg is smaller on a bantam than a LF. Bantams eat much less and need a little less space per bird. My birds lay eggs but not in large numbers so if high egg production is the goal they fall somewhat short there. They tend to mature grow slowly. I know some post their birds lay at 5-6 months but I also have some that are over 8 months before starting to lay. Temperament on my Bantam Cochins is very good. They love to go out and scratch but are not what I call great foragers. I consider them cold hardy but they need a draft free place to go. I only lost 1 bird to the heat last year and none to the cold. My birds survived from -10 to high 90's last year in an unheated draft free hog house. I hope this helps answer your questions.

It was picture day today.
And Beaker found a new friend.

How handsome Sanna!

Hi people...I am new to Cochins (got a quad two weeks ago) all bantams...well I just want to say how beautiful both in looks and temperament ... I washed all four yesterday and from the time I picked each one up they chattered and looked at me the whole time.

They did seem to enjoy their bath except for the mottled girl...lol

They are so soft and fluffy and tiny...so sweet...

I had to keep turning the cockeral around so he couldn't see himself in the bathroom mirror...he kept trying to 'display' to the other roo in the mirror...lol

Just wanted to say hi! I have been a silkie addict but oh my these bantam Cochins.... :/
