She got the last of what I had. Sold everything else back in mid Fall, saved the pair for her till I could ship. The male looks Blue Mottled, but is from a Blue to Splash mating, and neither of the parents had Mottled in their background.
Hi there,
I was wondering if you could help me.
I picked up 7 mixed chicks yesterday from a local breeder.
They're all purebred, but because I wasn't fussed what breeds I got, he just grabbed the best looking 7 from the bator as quickly as possible (still others hatching in there).
I asked him what he thought I had in there, and from a quick peek in the top of the box, he thought there was an Australorp...
When I had a better look after introducing them to my broody, the black chick has feathered feet and seems noticably smaller than the other chicks.
Now I'm wondering if it's not a bantam cochin?
Looks like a black cochin to me, see below. i have just hatched a whole bunch of black cochin chicks, some have more white on the wings, some have white around their eyes, and some have more yellow down, but all are black cochin bantams
I called the breeder today just to ask what he thought and he said he did have a few Pekin Bantams (that's the same as Cochin right?) in the bator.
He was so apologetic about saying it was an Aussie! I don't mind at all, and think a cochin is cuter anyway hehehe
Quote: even so, i do have a nice little mottled pullet about the same age that will be going with him as a test mating, just to see IF maybe it hid for several generations. who knows if a splash is mottled? kinda hard to tell if they're mostly white(ish) anyways.
Here's the cute little frizzled hen I picked up yesterday. She's 8 months old. The people I got her from said she isn't laying yet, but I suspect that may have something to do with the other birds terrorizing her and pulling all of her back and tail feathers out. She's super sweet

OK so after baths on the weekend I took some 'easy' shots of the new and very first bantam cochins I have....they are still in quarantine but seem happy enough...two splash pullets, a blue mottled pullet and a spalsh cockeral...they are not laying age yet...but i forgot to ask how old...I got them from the Jefferson show in GA...
