Cochin Thread!!!

I made some for my hens last year and I was surprised by how well they worked. 3 of my cochin hens had completely bare backs, but after a month with the saddle, lots of new feathers had grown in. I would definitely give them a try.
do you take them off now and then or just leave them?

By the time their feathers had filled back in, it was fall/winter and the boys had slowed down so I simply took them off. The hens had beautiful feathers all throughout winter, but when spring came, I was forced to put the saddles back on.

Here's a full pic of the one that was originally on the left in the close up. Granted, they were purchased from a pretty overcrowded, hobbled together backyard establishment, so I did expect to hear of mixed breeding at some point. They're very friendly but I already have a rooster so these cuties might have to go. They're too small to hold their own around my big easter egger. What makes you think roo here?
The bird looks fairly young, possibly 12 weeks at most? Most pullets will not even begin to show any coloration to the face until a month before laying, usually around 6 or more months. A bird showing red at this age is probably going to be a cockerel.

Thanks. I would like to see some of your pics.
I did cross him with my two Dark Brahmas and got 1/2 black and 1/2 blue. I was thinking about crossing pullets back to him.

Hi all, We recently took on two fully feathered blue Cochin bantams. Based on differences between wattles and combs, I believe we have one of each gender. Anyone want to help a newbie out with some educated guesses?

They both look like Wyandotte or Wyandotte mixes and if they are as young as I think they are, they look to both be cockerels.

The one on the left has muffs. Those are some interesting looking birds, I'll give you that.

I can't imagine there being Wyandotte in there, especially after seeing the full body picture of the other chick with the feathered legs and all. Wyandotte's don't have muffs, do they?
I'm not an expert but I would guess Ameraucana/Cochin mix, maybe?

not sure what part of nc you're in, but I plan to set up all my cochins once the younger ones start laying. the hens are mostly broody right now.

I'll have red, silver laced, bbs, blue/black mottled and mille fleur.  right now I've just got a couple mille babies growing out. one for sure pullet, a couple blue buff Columbian cockerels.

im pretty far away from virginia but i think i may have found some close to me but thanks

that's a rose comb, not a single, so they're probably Wyandotte mixes. saw someone else said brahma but they have pea combs... are their legs feathered or clean? yellow or pink?

edit. ok helps to read other posts first

araucana and Ameraucana both have pea combs... these are definitely rose combs. but could be a 'dotte and d'uccle cross or something else that has muffs. but i'm voting for 'dotte in at least half. the other half might not be cochin at all. the possibility also exists that they are multi-generational crosses, which means they could be 3 or 4 things mixed together...

but I agree, if they're under 4 months old, they're both roos.
