Cochin Thread!!!

yeah but that applies almost specifically to the silver duckwing OEGB... all we were referring to was that the cochin breed (in the us at least) does not exist in an e+ variety... although that silver?? roo does seem to be duckwing (referring only to the white wing triangle).

there are some other e-locus mutations that roosters will exhibit the duckwing pattern in, that primarily changes the hens' colors only. those are wheaten eWh and patridge eb .

i did a bit of research and the partridge and silver penciled DO apparently show the wing triangle, which is what I was seeing on that roo, but it's not the same thing as the e+ that would be needed for the crele variety to be correct, as we were talking about earlier.

so that roo that I posted a pic of, I would say is closer to being correct silver penciled than the others that were pictured. though that silver penciled hen that was not right, looked to be on a wheaten base rather than partridge, so that could be a large part of the problem with them not looking right.
Thanks, i will try and get some better pics of him next time i am on the farm, i have to see this little girl again, she is so friendly!

She is a meerkat, the dominant female in the pack and the friendliest little thing.

Andy thanks for posting that article, now I see how this guy fits the description of the SDW. I've got to go back and look at him again, couldn't he be a cornerstone in a Crele project? I was seeing him as a Birchen and faulting him for having the white primaries, not realizing that he is more valuable the way he is as a duckwing.

i highly doubt i can convince him to keep that cockerel, all of the birds pictured are in the sale pens, i had to convince him to move some orps out to make room for the partridges i begged him to keep. The guys pictured were all left over from a breeder giving up, the best birds would be in obscurity somewhere in one of our clubs.

i am over the moon that i convinced a good breeder and friend to start up partridge cochins bantams, now at least i dont have to stress about out crossing my stock. We just got large fowl cochins here too, i am no fan, but at least we are making progress!

Now i just need to find out why the partridge cockerels here have such wierd colours in their chests!

What a shame (for us) this bird isn't in the US. I would love to know what went into making him. So does this mean that Birchen is close to the SDW pattern? I see that he has the lacing in his hackles as apposed to the clear silver that the SDW should have. I wonder how far away from duckwing that he really is?
