Cochin Thread!!!

Which bird are you guys talking about that displays duckwing like characteristics?
There's no picture posted on here Andy. We were talking about trying to create the Crele pattern in Cochins and how difficult it would be since there are no existing Cochin colors/patterns containing the duckwing genetics with which to draw from to start a Crele program/project. ???? I hope that made sense.

i see, thanks Nancy. Duckwing considered wild type on an e+ base isnt it, essentially a complete lack of modifiers? i can see why that would be very difficult to get right, or even get started.

Ah i see. Came across this post during my internet trawls for info, about breeding Silver duckwing pattern, may be of interest.

See here
yeah but that applies almost specifically to the silver duckwing OEGB... all we were referring to was that the cochin breed (in the us at least) does not exist in an e+ variety... although that silver?? roo does seem to be duckwing (referring only to the white wing triangle).

there are some other e-locus mutations that roosters will exhibit the duckwing pattern in, that primarily changes the hens' colors only. those are wheaten eWh and patridge eb .

i did a bit of research and the partridge and silver penciled DO apparently show the wing triangle, which is what I was seeing on that roo, but it's not the same thing as the e+ that would be needed for the crele variety to be correct, as we were talking about earlier.

so that roo that I posted a pic of, I would say is closer to being correct silver penciled than the others that were pictured. though that silver penciled hen that was not right, looked to be on a wheaten base rather than partridge, so that could be a large part of the problem with them not looking right.

Andy thanks for posting that article, now I see how this guy fits the description of the SDW. I've got to go back and look at him again, couldn't he be a cornerstone in a Crele project? I was seeing him as a Birchen and faulting him for having the white primaries, not realizing that he is more valuable the way he is as a duckwing.
