Cochin Thread!!!

I am the receiver of the shipped cochins that arrived sick from Jamie. I was not happy about receiving birds sick, snotty and sneezing and with lice at the time, since I had expected better, but he contacted me back quickly with suggestions of treatment and I they were already improved by the third day of Tylan 50 injections. He sounded like if they had not recovered, he would have made things "right". He requested that if they did not get better, I let him know. I am not the type to go around and badmouth a person, but I don't think it is wrong for someone to share their experiences, if it can help another person. I think everyone should held accountable for the health of their birds, no matter where they fall on the totem pole.

I do want to add that I like Jamie. He was nice and explained things about other breeds to me while at the show. But, because he was nice does not mean I am going to be shy about my concerns about the birds' welfare.

Thanks for posting Sarah. I was more than willing to fight this one on my own, but I appreciate you speaking up. I doubt my other 'aquaintance' will post, and I don't expect her to, but Jamie never told her he vaccinated with the CEO LG vaccine. She put them in with her birds after the 30 day quarantine and she ended up losing thousands of dollars in birds.

Again, I am just a concerned chicken owner trying to look out for other hopefully concerned chicken owners. I am not slandering Jamie. It just happens that these were all cases with birds that came form him and I want to make people aware and make sure you quarantine and just watch for any signs of anything.

Nice people can have sick birds, and having sick birds does not make one a bad person (unless they sell you a bird that they know is sick or carrying something). He may not have known they were sick, they may have looked/acted healthy when he shipped. Shipping is very stressful for a bird, and if they are carrying some hidden germs or their immune system is weak, the stress will bring on a full blown illness. I do know that Jamie is a very nice guy and he would not ship sick birds. I have had very good dealings with him and I know he would make things right if there is a problem. He loves his birds and wants his customers to love them too. I would certainly buy from him again. His birds are beautiful.

They certainly didn't get the lice in the mail but they are all cleared up now, so no worries there. When it comes to parasite prevention I have pretty high standards since creepy crawlies on my birds gross me out. I'm also pretty big on it from working at our humane society a few years - I set the record for selling the most Frontline in a month, and they had to change their employee rewards system because of me since I got way too much free stuff, hah. I've realized though it seems to be pretty common for most birds even from prominent breeders to have external parasites. My logic is that they probably put the birds' bodies under stress and make them more susceptible to developing illnesses down the road.

Advice for anyone having birds shipped - Mine did end up spending two days in the mail which I think probably added to them getting sick. If you are having someone ship birds, make sure you ask the person you are buying from that they ship out in the morning, and not later in the day. I think mine ended up being dropped off at the post office around 12:30 pm, and because it was after 12 noon, despite paying for Express mail, they would not be delivered the next day. I didn't know it worked this way until I spoke to the post office employees. Having an extra day of shipping plus the lice probably put a lot of stress on them.

I haven't met Jamie in person, but I agree from talking to him through emails he seems like a great guy. I am pleased with the trio I got from him, although the cockerel may end up being a bit large for my breeding program (47 oz at 6 months) since a few of my pullets and hens are already over the standard. Keeping weight closer to the standard size is something I want to concentrate on for my first few generations. Here they are the day I got them, after baths and blow-drying.

Since he's sold birds to literally hundreds of people I guess 4 having "issues" isn't too bad. What were your "issues" BTW?

You know, I don't care if I get attacked, as I was told in a message, "...don't mind those sticking up for him, and don't try and change their minds, not worth the effort."

I believe I posted my issues, or at least one of them, a couple pages back - with a photo. Again, just hoping strict quarantining is practiced. I'd hate for anyone to lose birds because precautions weren't made and people were not aware of the possible danger.
