Cochin Thread!!!

I aked this over on the cochin bantam thread, bu thought I would post here as well. I have a few wuestions. And i apologize in advance if this has been previously covered. What exactly goes into the breeding of the mottled cochins ( specifically bantams, not that it matters)? Do you use black when breeding mottleds? Do you just breed mottled to mittled? If so is the offspring 100% mottled? I am asking bevausr i have a pair if mottled bantams, plus i was thinking about purchading some black bantam eggs from a fellow BYCer soon. Thanks for any help!

Preferable to breed Mottled to Mottled. In reality not many mottled are looking like correct mottleds lately. Many look too much like a Black and White splash. They are supposed to have a small white feather tip not the white feather end 1/2 inch long. If you really want to use a Black x Mottled cross you can. Breed the offspring back to the mottled parent or to siblings and get a percentage of mottled chicks. Usually doesn't show up in the first generation but Black hides so much that you never really know.

You can also breed to blue mottled or splash mottled if you happen to get ahold of any of those colors. I really like this page for explaining the genetics: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/punnett-squares

Splash mottled?????
Non recognized varieties. Splash mottled looks a lot like a splash until you go back to a black or Blue that carry mottled genes. Some do it and I haven't figured out the advantage to that cross yet. Must say that the type on the Blue Mottleds has been good on the ones I have seen. Partly because they are a project variety that have been bred to high standards by a few breeders with high standards. . I have trouble telling a Splash Mottled from a Splash in many cases. I can see Blue Mottled becoming recognized within 10 years if the current breeders get 5 more people also breeding at the same high standards and showing.

I have a black bantam Cochin. She seems to be losing weight and mainly wanting to sleep. Every morning we feed her some oatmeal to help her keep warm and eat more. She will eat and drink only in little amounts. Also it is about 46 and up degrees so at first I thought she was just getting used to the cold but thus has been going on for a while so now I believe it is more than the cold that is bugging her. Any ideas on keeping her warm and getting her to eat

My silkie pullet is doing the same but not sleeping. Maybe the others aren't letting her eat and she starving and trying to conserve it by sleeping. I keep mine under a heat lamp and fee her bread twice a day and the rest of the time she eats feed.
