Cochin Thread!!!

I have a black bantam Cochin. She seems to be losing weight and mainly wanting to sleep. Every morning we feed her some oatmeal to help her keep warm and eat more. She will eat and drink only in little amounts. Also it is about 46 and up degrees so at first I thought she was just getting used to the cold but thus has been going on for a while so now I believe it is more than the cold that is bugging her. Any ideas on keeping her warm and getting her to eat

I'd also ask in the sick chicken thread.....but is she all ruffled up and doesn't want to move? I had a hen do this, would eat and drink a little but got worse and died. Then another started acting the same....they had coccidiosis. I treated them all and perked right up in a day. They never had funny poo, and I've never delt with this but I looked up other suggestions and it all seemed to point to worms or cocci...I worm with safeguard so I didn't think it was that. Yours might not be, so look up her symptoms here on BYC and go from there what may be wrong.

I am in north east pa

Does anybody have a pullet or a few or a pair of cochins for sale? That can be shipped? If so pm me please

Any preference on color? I will be weeding out some more Mille Fleur/Calicos and some Buff Columbian looking birds that are part of my Mille Fleur project. I am in Benton, PA - so I shouldn't be that far of a hike for you.

In search of standard size frizzle chickens. Will travel or pay shipping. Red, black, white and whatever else is available. I'm in Va and am looking for vaccinated chicks. Thanks

This may sound like a silly question, but at what age does it take for Cochins to get that rounded "ball shaped" tail feathers? And are there certain types of Cochins with, like a slow feathering gene that would make that take longer?

The Cochins are just slow to mature all around. My roo took longer to get his feathers and waddles, longer to crow, longer to mate, and grow his spurs.

my cochins r 9 months old and still aren't laying lol urgh its annoying
Age is needed but so is enough light daily as well as proper nutrition for them to be laying. If you want to force laying then I suggest putting a light in the coop that comes on at 3AM and goes off at 9AM. That way they get all the light needed to stimulate egg production and they will go to roost normally. After 6 weeks of this they will probably start laying. Good Luck Happy Holidays!

Got a really NICE Birchen Cochin Bantam rooster today!!!! I'll have to get Christmas pictures in the morning!!! Sad thing is, he got too close to the heat lamp and singed some feathers. So he's got about 5 feathers missing in one spot. Lol.
