Cochin Thread!!!

Age is needed but so is enough light daily as well as proper nutrition for them to be laying.  If you want to force laying then I suggest putting a light in the coop that comes on at 3AM and goes off at 9AM. That way they get all the light needed to stimulate egg production and they will go to roost normally. After 6 weeks of this they will probably start laying.  Good Luck Happy Holidays!

I have them in an outside run and on proper nutrition , same as all my other birds that r laying, I talked to the breeder that I got them from and she said some of hers don't lay till eleven months so I'm guessing thats that is it

My cochins r 8 - 9 months old and have been laying for a month or so now. And currently I have 22 that r broody! I swear its catchy in my flock. I love walking in my coop and every nest box and corner starts squawking at me and 22 hens poof up. Lol!

Got a really NICE Birchen Cochin Bantam rooster today!!!! I'll have to get Christmas pictures in the morning!!! Sad thing is, he got too close to the heat lamp and singed some feathers. So he's got about 5 feathers missing in one spot. Lol.

Here's my bantam pair.

Here's my rooster! He's about 4 years of age. He's got some lemon leakage, but that comes with age I believe. He's REALLY filled out. Lol! I just can't keep my eyes off of him lol!

Very sad Christmas today. While we were upstairs opening gifts our dog Holly was outside terrorizing our chickens. She killed 3, injured one and one is lost. We can't find her. I lost some of my best (favorite) birds. Lost my sweet Sparkles, Norie & Cheech. My beautiful Caroline is hurt bad and Izzie can't be found. I am devastated.

That is horrible, so sorry! Had she until then been okay around the birds? Our collie hasn't ever shown any sign of aggression towards them, but I do worry sometimes that she might change her mind. As far as I can tell, she just thinks they are walking "treat dispensers".

I hope you are able to find her and your other missing flock members.

Only one is missing (Izzie). 3 are dead, one is injured. I am treating her wounds, giving her asntibiotics & TLC. She is cuddling with me tonight. I need to get her to eat & drink. Our GSD has never gone after the birds before. But she is a herding dog and she was bored outside while we were opening gifts. :( **** dog!
