yes, buff & barred cochins mated together, the cull to breed the black out of the buff.

cool! thank you for letting me know that! i have a couple more little buff cochin chickies i bought yesterday so here's hoping they are all pullets and can help it go a little quicker when they grow up! i may eventually see about getting some buff barred eggs or birds from you to help out!

How old are they? I ask because my Stella is the same size and I am not sure of her age:)

They're all around the 3-4 month old mark. Some are growing alot faster than others. They're all adorable though!! I do love my cochins!!

Laurie

Thanks I think she is a she then

Maybe. I go them from bantyshanty (only wanted pullets). I think she got them from a lady in PA, eBay. Only the males hatched out barred. I will be taking the buff pullet from the hatch and crossing it back to the best buff barred rooster.
You have a very lovely roo!

Yep , I bet that is a grandson.

It is really hard to get the barring on the hen for some reason, I don't know why. I do have a couple of pullets that are showing more barring(actually looks mottled) than their mothers. I am doing a out cross this year to some very typey buff cochins...this may set me back a couple of years but I hope it will be worth it to get better type on them.

Oh

hopefully he takes after grandpa then!
Barring is sex-linkable, so maybe that has to do with why the hens don't pick it up like the boys. But, still after a few generations you would think they would have it.
Crossing to better buffs sounds like a good idea. I know mine could go for better type. It's an interesting project.

Hey all, I am pleased to say we picked up a six-pack of two week old cohins of varying colors but we aren't sure exactly what colors we have. Would yall say this little one is going to be a black cochin?

And what about the fuzzy one in front?

I dont know much about Lavender Cochins but from other birds I have seen your boy is for sure one of the best colored and typed birds I have seen. I was thinking on getting into the Lavender variety and breeding them.

Hi all!! I love this thread!! I have a super cute, very feisty lavender roo that I'd love your opinion on. I've never shown and would love to know how to evaluate my birds a little better. Thanks!!

He's a bantam, right? I think he's looking pretty great! Are you going to the RMFF show this Saturday?

Hi IS a bantam, but he thinks he's really big!

I had forgotten about that show this Saturday...I am really going to try to get there? Are you going?

I try to get there every year. We had an itty-bitty BYC meetup there last year - I think there were 4 of us! I had my entry form in hand for this year, and "chickened" out. Maybe next year I'll get up the nerve to show!

Do you have any lavender hens for that pretty boy?
