Hello cochin enthusiasts! I actually popped in here with a question; do feathered feet get really dirty? I live in a place where it rains a lot... and snows a lot, of course. I'm worried spring might be tough on feather legged breeds. I don't care about the looks so much as the health of the birds, I can't imagine having wet muddy feathers could be good for any chicken.

The feathers almost caused me to replace my two cochins I ordered with wyandottes. However, after looking over a lot of cochin pics, I never saw any birds with noticeably matted feathers; how do you keep them clean, if it's necessary at all?

I was also wondering if standard cochins can be mottled? I've only seen mottled bantams for sale... but I love the mottled look! I ordered a silver laced, so hopefully she's close enough for now... and I ordered a b/b/s pullet who I'm hoping and praying will be either blue or splash!

My cochins have no problems with rain or snow. I have never cleaned their feet.

I don't know if they come in a standard mottled. I personally prefer my black over my blue or splash.

Mine will get their feathers stuck together if they're really adventurous. Usually just when the feathers are wet. But they must have good grooming practices because I've never seen them turn into big mud balls. Some of my non feather footed ladies have issues with mud balls building up on their toes but never noticed it with my Cochins. They're very hygienic :)

I currently have two cochins. One rooster, one hen. I used to have another hen, the buff one pictured below, but recently some predator (possibly a dog, though we did not see the suspect and found little evidence) took her and 4 of her friends. Luckily, we still have the other hen and the rooster. :)
