Cochin Thread!!!

When I first started out in Exhibition Poultry, the then old-timers would tell you that the you get your type from the female and the color from the male. I find this to be somewhat true. Not always, and certainly if you use a female with fantastic type with a male that doesn't hold breed characteristics you can expect poor results, but in generally speaking it's a decent rule of thumb. However, if you must use a bird with a known fault, try to offset that fault by mating to a bird that is good in that area.

Self-Blue vs. Blue: Genetically different altogether. Self-Blue breed true when bred together, whereas the Blue X Blue will yield Black, Blue and Splash. A Self Blue doesn't have lacing, but is a nice even shade of Lavenderish blue. There are several topics on this forum that show Lavender (Self-Blue) birds, mostly Orps I believe, and the pic a couple frames above is a Self Blue Cochin hen.

The following are 2008 hatch birds and all were used in my 2009 Breeding pens. Just thought I'd show a few pics of different colors.

I love the columbians! I was going to put a white girl in with my MF roo and see if I get anything close to buff columbian. Here's some of my cochins:

Banty mottled roo, coming out of a molt:

LF Partridge roo- he has weird eyes, so I sold off my girls. He's HUGE and super sweet:

THANX TOM!!! This is exactly what I wanted to know/learn! Good, practical advice to guide me going forward.

Love your pics!! Of course I'm partial to the Columbians, but the white hen sure is a looker! When typed right, there is just something about the beauty in the simplicity of white Cochin that you can't resist!

Drat! I was hoping to improve type on my Mille Fleur and Calico Cochins by investing in SQ Columbian and Mottled roosters. My thinking was I could improve a lot more chicks by having a good rooster rather than 1 good hen at a time.

Tom, what are your thoughts regarding outcrossing when working on a patterned variety such as mille fluer? Since I already have MFC hens and cocks, wouldn't it make more sesce to buy a couple SQ roosters to outcross on the MFC hens?

Though I'd post a few photos of my white cochin bantam pair. I got them this past summer. They have both since filled out. I plan to breed from them this spring:
