Cochin Thread!!!

I like your buff barred roo. Mine have too much dark in their tail feathers. One is a little better than the other, but they both have more than they should have and the pullets both also have some dark tail feathers. One of them only has a couple, but one is one too many. That means I'm going to be breeding for ?? how many generations to get rid of that. Plus there's always the business of improving type. Mine aren't too bad, but there's room for improvement. I think I'm lucky that the pullet with the least amount of dark feathers in her cushion is the best type wise. They also have great dispositions (thank goodness). Would you mind letting me know where you got your stock? I'd like to have another trio. I don't think there are too many people that are actually working on them so most likely any foundation birds come from one of these few places. My stock originated from either Mich or Wisconsin (can't remember which they said) even though I bought them from some folks in Celina, Oh.
If you find that you will be selling chicks this spring, I'd really appreciate being able to get a few. I might even be able to drive over to pick them up, depending on how far east you are. Maybe we could work out a trade also, if I have anything you're interested in.
Anyway all of this said, your birds are very nice.

Hopefully. (I only have one hen so I imagine my egg yield will be rather small). I am not NPIP tested also, so I can only sell locally or meet up, depending on where you live. If you have to go with shipped S & C birdfarm has Buff Barred Cochins. I've never seen their stock or pictures, so I don't know the quality, but they do have them.

Sadly, I don’t know where my birds are from. I got them from a local lady whom got them off someone on eBay.
That black showed up in Cactus Toast’s (the rooster’s name) later on. His brother (Tigger) doesn’t have any black, but has less defined barring. My hen is just a plain buff, but a carrier.

I got my birds from S&C and I had to beg for months to get these.

They (S&C) are working on their program and don't have a lot of birds. The ones that they have they want to keep for the obvious reasons. I saw some of their adults that were extremely nice, but of course they weren't going to let me have those. Brother Paul was very honest about what he was letting me have, they weren't the culls but they weren't his best. I just considered myself lucky to get them. I got the only two pullets he had available at that time and luckily one of them turned out to be pretty nice.
I have black, blue (splash) birchen, black & blue mottled, and partridge cochin, and I think I can safely say they are relatively nice. They are NOT hatchery stock. Then I've got these little play around birds, the buff barred and mille fleur. I also have d'Uccle in mille fleur, lavender, porcelain. If there's anything there that sounds like something you'd be interested in, let me know and we can work on this trade thing.

I've heard that the females look more like a buff mottled. If you look under bantam cochins under Feathersite there is buff cuckoo hens that are patterned. Here is a picture of Tigger and Cactus Toast. Tigger is on the right.

Mottled, Birchen, Buff Barred, and Blue/Black/ Splash. Hmm. I'm in for a trade, not sure for which color though. lol.

I have a question regarding roos. Our roo is almost 7 and seems to pretty much have quite crowing, we were hoping to get one more season out of him, what do you think the probability of that is??

My Junglefowl cross rooster is fourteen years old, and he had chicks last summer. He can't keep up with as many hens as he used to, but the chicks have all been healthy. I also noticed that he doesn't crow as much, but figured he just felt secure with his conditions (while the young boys are showing off). As long as your boy is healthy is their any harm breeding him? (However, I like to keep an extra rooster around just in case.)

If possible, put aside 3 of your best hens with him and hatch from those. See if you get less fertility as well. Look for another roo to cover the rest of your hens. he may be able to cover only a few girls, even just 2, without problems but if he has 7 or so then it may be a bit much.
