Cochin Thread!!!

Since you all are cochin fans, I wanted to give you a heads up that I'm selling our LF splash cochin trio (post is on the message board under 'Over 8 weeks.' We got them from Duane Urch as day-old chicks, and they've been living happily in a mixed flock. The only problem is that they're so mild mannered, they get pushed around a bit. Our roo, for example, is the gentlest soul. We thought he'd have a happier time if he could be part of a breeding trio. They're so slow to develop, I thought someone might want avoid the growing out phase and go directly to adulthood.

Here's our handsome roo...

Well, I don't know how to describe it. I'd be better off taking pictures. The weather has been awful, so just as soon as I can, I'll try to take some pics and get them up loaded. Both boys have a small patch of dark feathers that measures about 1" square. All in all that spreads out to look like quite a bit. The one pullet has about the same amount and the better one has about half that amount. I think your birds are much better than mine.

That isn't to bad, but probably looks even more apparent since they are all in the same location. And considering that the original cross was Barred x Buff it isn't surprising. I would imagine culling next year could really help get rid of the black. Sadly, my pullet isn't to great, she has vulture hawks.

I've heard that the females look more like a buff mottled. If you look under bantam cochins under Feathersite there is buff cuckoo hens that are patterned. Here is a picture of Tigger and Cactus Toast. Tigger is on the right. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/23433_camera_go_187.jpg

Mottled, Birchen, Buff Barred, and Blue/Black/ Splash. Hmm. I'm in for a trade, not sure for which color though. lol.

- so beautiful!
I've got Partridge, Mille Fleur, and Lavender/Self-blue (just started). When my two project-color flocks get better established I sure do want to work on the Buff-barred.

I have a couple of nice Mottled to improve my Mille Fleurs and I have a young little pair of Buffs. I didn't plan on raising Buffs but they were going to be live-trap bait........ and now I know they are so sweet.

A live-trap bait...the buffs must just be telling you that you need yet another breeding project.

I'd be hesitant to use the number 2 guy. He may be a pretty boy, but once you've introduced that brown into your line it's very stubborn about getting rid of it and it's definitely a fault. The first birds color is much more clear and clean looking. I can't think of a good reason to use the lesser bird when you've got the number one bird.

I have 2 White Cochin hens and a few mixed hens. Can't wait to see what I get. I'll refrain from putt "Brown Boy" in w/ the other chickens.
