Cochin Thread!!!

Hi,

I am new to keeping chickens. Took six, what were suppose to be pullets from a day old chick order five weeks ago. All are doing great and GROWING. Let the kids pick which ones we took home. Afterward, we figured out one of the chicks we ended up with was most likely the "free exotic chick" and as such a good chance a male. All but certain he is a Partridge Cochin (standard).

The fun of the assortment orders is ending up with something great that you never would have chosen yourself. I have read about the advantages of a rooster to protect the hens, etc. My big question is how much noise should we expect from this probable rooster (my son named him "Chi" which he claims is chinese for chicken). I am concerned about bothering my neighbors. Any other insight is also apprecieted.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi Kevin,
I have found there is quite a bit if difference among my LF Cochin males as to how loud/often they crow. You might try buttering up your neighbors with free eggs.

Your son is so handsome! He and "Bock-Bock" look like a good team!

I really love all the photos of the white Cochins recently. I have got to get busy and hatch off some lovely white babies before those hens go broody, too. Most all of my Cochins have gone broody.
