Well, I'm a little frustrated. I have been looking for a show quality hen or pullet or two. It's kind of a long story, but I recently re-aquired the only remaining son (that I know of) from my son's old show rooster. We entered him in county shows, but he won every show he was ever in. He's a bantam black cochin, and he's no "spring chicken." I'd like to raise some chicks out of him before he kicks the bucket.

Anybody with some leads on some nice pullets or hens please p.m. me. It would be nice if the pullets were near point of lay. As I said, he's not a young rooster, and I would be really sad if I wasn't able to get some chicks out of him.

Mandy, isn't the ideal cross a Buff Columbian?.........if you can find one.

exactly, IF you can find one but it would produce double laced also so I'm not sure how that would do when breeding back to get the single lacing on the pullets

Mandy, I need some help with the genetics on this, please. I thought there was no Co gene in either Pencilled or Double-Laced birds, and that Co was only present in Single-Laced birds.

when you cross the gold laced and buff columbian you get
Pullets:
black patterned gold incomplete doublelaced/halfspangled
Cockerels:
black patterned gold incomplete laced/halfspangled

this is what I have been getting in my kaleidoscopes. the pullets are double laced and cockerels have regular lacing

If that's the true color of the combs, I would say 2 pullets. If not, the one on the left may be a roo if his comb is more red, but looks like 2 girls to me.

The one on the left does have some color in it, but compared to one of my other cochins it's comb isn't really big. Not sure if I can really go by that or not...

Here's another picture of Polly the one on the left.

Thanks everyone

Girl! Congrats, you lucky thing! My babies are about two months and the 3 OUT OF 4 little ones have already started their "crowing contest"! Their combs are sure-enough red.

Wow! I'm so excited, and really surprised! Thanks Coopa - your post is how I just found out about the pic of the week. Abigail is named after my 3 year old daughter and she is absolutely my sweetest hen.

hey there DixieChickie- just wondering where in VA you are located and if your still thinking of letting these little ones go. I've got 13 cochins that are 3 weeks old and really love the blues and splashes. If you are still interested in finding them a home PM me with your location and price and maybe we could work something out
