Yes.. Why because I dont have access to Wild Red Jungle Fowl, wich is the standard if anybody wishes to confirm or document any un documented Genes, in this case the seldom documented Di(Dilute) Cb(Champagne Blonde).. so Wild type OEG(e+ Black breasted Red Duckwing) will do for me as they are handy to me..

4H showing at your county fair SHOULD be about showing off your birds, the experience of showing, meeting other breeders, and just having fun!

I don't think they will DQ it because it's a non-standard variety, but every county fair has different rules.

I agree with Gail. Show it if you want and if they want to DQ tell them you are showing in the AOV Cochin class. That should prevent any DQ talk.

what makes it a roo? the coloring? or do you see hackle and saddle feathers? any help with this would be greatly appreciated so i can try to learn

Need a bit of help with cochin color genetic stuff. I recieved and hatched eggs that came from a pen of multiple colors. The colors in the pen were white, black and red. My question is on three of the chicks I kept. I thought they would be black. One is feathering in all black, and two are feathering in black with brown/red neck feathers. I am getting started with breeding black and self blue but also have a pair of red and 2 gold laced pullets. If the black isn't pure when bred to my blacks will I still get black? With the other two I assume that they are black/red crosses, correct? What would happen if bred to black? or red?

I am saving up for my genetics book but $130 doesn't come quick when you only work one day a week and have to use that money for feed.

Also one other quick question. I have 2 broody self blue bantam cochins. Did great on the broody thing. I tried to give them chicks and they abandoned the nest. So I gave their original eggs back. They are hatching now one of the broodies killed the first to hatch and promptly abandoned the nest. They have experiment eggs that the chicks might go to auction anyway so I am a bit sad but not heartbroken. The other one is still sitting on the eggs and the second chick. I will be seperating her when they hatch if she seems ok with the chicks. Is it normal for young cochins to be like this? I got a better mommy out of my jersey giant hen, albeit she squished a couple but she is young and huge. My good broodies seem to have been raised by broodies. If there is the possibility that she will never make a good mommy? If so, I will be putting a band on her since I can't tell the difference between the two. My cochin rooster makes a better mommy than her and thats not really saying much. I have horrible cochins. I thought they were all supposed to be great mommys and broodies. They didn't get the memo because it got wrongly sent to my laying flock. 3 of which have babies and one more is broody.

Hey I only earn 500$ a month but everything I learned was over the internet...

I'll give you 3 links that will help you ALOT

1. google the classroom at the coop
2. chicken calculator made by one the best guy around the classroom and here(Henk69)
http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html

3. google Poultry Breeding and genetics (by Roy .D Crawford) once you have read it once... read it again and again(I have not stoped)

to answere your Black, white ,Red chick questions

Self Black is dominant to ALL but Self white(which is Self Black with Dominant white) Barred, Blue..
so if you want Self blue color, keep breeding those Black chicks back to blue and they will never be another color unless your self blue(is this lavender?) are not pure for Black(E/?)

try the chicken calculator its Cool...
