I remember you talking about him. I know you are numb and grieving, but the first thing you have to do as soon as possible is make sure the rest of your flock is secure. I would go to the predator forum, describe the attack and carcass, and someone should be able to identify the culprit so that you know what you're up against.

Please accept my sincere sympathies. We all know how devastating it can be to find one of our "favorites" dead.

We have had Bobcat problems for the last two weeks & have lost 6. We have "Fort Knox" at night but during the day they all free-range. We have never had an attack during the day until now. The cat was so bold as to come up on our Patio to grab our "house roo", Renoir. It's the helpless feeling that is so hard to deal with. Let love heal the hurt & time heal the pain....

I am sorry to hear about Monet and your pullet!

I know how you feel! Last year I lost my favorite pullet, she was attacked by an unknown creature as well! I know you will miss them dearly, they are in Chicken heaven now and you will always have the memories of them! I do agree! You should make sure the rest of you flock is secure and try to figure out the predator.

Mr. Ree :

Feels awesome when something like that happens! Going somewhere not expecting to see anything and being surprised by finding something worth-while. I went to an auction/sale/swap thingy one time with no expectations or finding anything with good quality, didnt even bring anything with me to put them in, and ended up spedning like $175 on birds and show boxes to bring them home in. It wasnt bad, because I only spent $75 for three show boxes that were 9 holes all together. Brought home 8 birds that day too, lol.

I'm so sorry Robert, what a terrible heartache for you. I hope that you have some babies from Monet that will help to fill the void.

Do you possibly have rats? I had a terrible problem with them this summer, they can get through chicken wire and I came in to find a gorgeous pullet dead, half eaten and they tried to pull her through the chicken wire. I am trying to switch all my cages to hardware cloth now instead of chicken wire. When I found my little pullet, they had attacked her around the neck area first. I hope you can keep your other birds safe and you don't lose anymore. Again, so sorry for your loss~

Thank you. I had not thought that rats could do that, but I guess it's a possibility. I was thinking perhaps a raccoon. I found a place where the staple in the wire had been pulled loos. I tried to secure as best I can until tomorrow when I will have an opportunity to do a better job of repairing the coop.
He was my first bantam Cochin and started me with this breed that seems to fit me and my personality. I have one rooster from him that I just couldn't part with and a couple of hens as well, but still... I can't believe how attached I can get to a little chicken! but they have such great personalities and add a lot of enjoyment to my life.

That is funny but I don't blame you.
I went to an auction tonight and actually found a nice pair of Mottled. I swore it was safe to go, "There won't be any high quality Cochins there, especially this time of the year". I was REALLY suprized! The roo I will (hopefully) use for my Mille Fleur type improvement. The pullet is a blue Mottled. I have always avoided the Andalusian blues knowing the genetics would take up too much of my pen space. But she is so pretty and sweet. I've never seen any decent blue Mottles at an auction around here. - Have I justified my aquisitions enough yet?
Pictures to come.

If you ever need help justifying anything, I can help! I'm an expert at it anymore!! LOL Can't wait to see pictures

This was a problem I had in the past. The rats are attracted to the feed the birds dont eat and eventually when the numbers rise and populations get sustained they need more food and will begin attacking and eating birds. Never had a problem with standard birds as adults, only bantams and juvenile birds. Lost some peachicks this way too. After I figured out what I was up against I started fighting back and making sure everything was beyond secure and doubled up the wire on all sides just to be sure. Thats the main reason behind putting wire down under the subfloors of my coop and 3 feet up the walls. Havent had any problems since I figured out what it was and took steps to stop and prevent it. I also took in a couple stray cats to help with the problem. They put a HUGE dent in the population of both the rats and mice. My coop was getting overrun with near thousands of mice, you could open the coop door at nite and all you seen and heard were mice scattering. My moms cat is phenominal mouse catcher so I let her come and go in and out of the coop at her leisure and within two weeks the numbers had declined drasticly. Not to mention, I like my birds used to other animals like cats and dogs, so they are naturally not so skiddish, and show easier and stay less srtessed.
