Cochin Thread!!!

he's much better looking than the bratty boy i have growing out in my coop. he's not going to make it into the breeding program unless his 'tude changes drastically. one of his sisters seems to be learning from him

the other sister is very sweet and i'll be keeping her to work with my faverolles to help get the color into them.

I have a gray cochin that I thought was a chicken but now I am questioning the sex. She/he is 8 months old and is low in the pecking order. She/he eats last and is on the lower roost. A couple days ago she/he started crowing. Is it possible for a female to crow? I haven't seen her laying but I don't see most of my chickens when they are laying. Any help is appreciated!

If he's eight months old, hasn't layed, and has started crowing, it's a male (cockerel).

To assist you with your terminology:
Male chickens, generally up to one year old, are called cockerels.
Male chickens, generally older than one year, are called cocks.
(The term rooster can be generically used for all males.)

Female chickens, generally up to one year old, are called pullets.
Female chickens, generally older than one year, are called hens.

Sigh.... I've been very bad

I started up my incubator last night....

everyone kept talking about hatching out their new babies and my calicos and brown reds started laying and I just couldn't help myself!! I just shut down my incubators and cleaned them a month ago and swore I wouldn't start hatching until spring. This thread is such a bad influence on me!!

It's OK - I think it's all Amy's fault! She's the Master Enabler around here! As long as you're hatching Brown Reds (and hopefully soon Lemon Blues), you should keep the incubator on year-round!

I have a beautiful blue hen from Jamie in with the brown red trio right now, it may even be her that is laying

I can't wait to hatch out my new babies. I think it's a wonderful thing to do in the New Year! Hey, it's winter what else is there to do. I just need to get your brother over here to build me a brooder box Gail!! LOL

HAHAHA! Its ok. I know how you feel. I built a cabinet incubator and can't wait to see how it does. I ran it for a week with no eggs and it seems to work great. Tomorrow I'm putting eggs in it. I won a egg auction, plus some of my own. All bantam cochins. The best of luck with your hatch.
