Cochin Thread!!!

he looks good on type but his wings do appear to be low. takes after his dad i'm sure. my hens have good wings but that blue male has kind of weak wings. I think his mottling will be nice and evenly distributed once he gets his adult feathers. the tail does look barred in the pics but that looks like he had feather mites when they were coming in. I have seen that a lot this year. mites along with fleas on the dogs have been horrible

So should I not use him in my Splash breeding program? Will he pass on the weak wings?

Stephanie, I think Chris09 has just the absolute best reference thread (below). He is constantly updating it. If you can't find the answer
regarding the dominance of weak wings, then I would post the question on his thread. If you do use him, I would definitely chose your hen with the highest and tightest wing carriage.

that's not what I meant, guess I was nit-picking too hard lol. the males always tend to have weaker wings. I would just be careful about your hen's wings that you breed him with

Matt, I have you wrote down as getting some. Do not worry!
I know you love them and I hope to have some blue Mottleds in with this guy to get you some eggs from, too. That way maybe your blue Mottled program can get off the ground. I have a nice hen from Nella Bean I am anxious to hatch from with this guy but right now she is in another pen finishing her molt.

Besides, how can you expect better than that beautiful Amy! Gosh, she is to die for! A bit more white needed but she is one awesome girl.

Between you and Nella Bean, my girls go to great homes. I am trying to get the white back in these birds, thanks to Nella Bean. She brought me a very nice roo that should help as well as this pullet pictured with Ranger! They are young but I am excited about the new breeding pens I am setting up. This will give me three!!!!

Amy,

Your Ranger is beautiful. I hope I'm that lucky. I just checked my broody this morning & she is tight as a tick on her eggs (from you). All 4 eggs are peeping & she is singing to them.

Hope to have pics either tonight or tomorrow. I can hardly wait~!

Oh, Lynne! That is so exciting!
I love hearing the mama hens talking to the babies before they hatch. It is so beautiful.

Be sure to let me know when they hatch. I am excited they made it across the country and are getting ready to hatch for you. Soon you will have some new lovelies to watch grow up and add to the breeding program.

Ranger needs more color, imo but his type is very nice so I am not overly concerned. Maybe his kids will have more to show for it. It is so hard to balance the white tips on best typed birds. I would be totally nuts by now if I planned to exhibit my birds. Just having the type is good enough for me. I will slowly work on well colored birds.

Now, the MFC program is certainly driving me nuts! I can't even get my pullets to have the type I want but I guess I should not rush it. It has only been 2 years for me. Another 5-8 years and maybe I will have some hens with good conformation.

Hey Amy,

I've been working on the MFC project for almost 4 years & "just this summer" got close to some of the type I have been searching for.....I've lost some of the good pattern but I'm sure that will come back. I really don't worry too much. I don't show & this project is just for my enjoyment. I'm like you, I don't have to please anyone but "ME"~~! Catch ya later today with an update on the babies.
