Cochin Thread!!!

I have seen him carry them a little better. Will it be a serious breeding problem (should I not use him to improve color/type in my Splash)?

Only you can make the decision as whether to use him. He does have low wing carriage. His color is good. Weak wings was the most common comment on Bantam cochin tags at Crossroads (most often on males).

Ummm...on the 'weak wings' thing. Is that strictly a genetics problem or could it be a husbandry issue? I mean, does it make a difference whether a cochin is out and about all day and using its wings? Are droopy wings more common on chickens confined for showing/breeding purposes....?
Just curious.

i have heard that giving them a higher roost can sometimes help to exercise the wing muscles to help bring that back into shape so they will tuck their wings tighter up towards their body and tail areas. but i am no expert on that yet.

Wow! Where was I when you posted these photos? Those are some very nice birds. Love that Mottled girl! And that first photo of the pullet is gorgeous!
The MF birds look like a nice program that is on going. Good color to work with and hopefully the type will come together as they mature.

AMY!!! You have a wonderful eye, those 2 mottled hens came from you! The MF rooster pictured also came from you. Haha!! He is producing some nice babies. I have several I am growing out. I just love the personality of the mottleds and love the MF project.

LOL I can't believe how well I zoomed in them. I sell so many and am never sure when I see beautiful ones if they have come from my breedings or not. I know you probably have birds from several folks but I like what I like! Good to know I like what I am producing. I hope you are happy with those pretty birds.

It took me forever to decide which of my Mottled roos to keep back this year, if any turned out nice enough. I really wanted one with a lot more white than what Rascal has but alas, that is not to be.
I tagged a roo when he was about 6 weeks old that I thought was the best of all in the 16 I had to choose from. I watched them grow, I weighed them, turned them all around, looked them over every once and a while and continued to watch them grow. As the summer rolled on and I sold off ones that were not what I needed to continue my program I kept being pulled towards the one that I liked the best. A few weeks ago I was down to only a few Mottleds cockerels and it had been about a month since I last looked them over so I stood back and watched them and picked up the one I liked the best of those last few. I rolled him around in my hands, checked him over and then turned him on his back to check toes. Lo and behold, it was my tagged roo.

I feel I still have a ways to go to achieve super Mottleds but this boy will be bred to some up and coming ladies for the next generation of my Mottled program.

Introducing Ranger.......

He has just turned 6 months old. There is still a lot that will need to mature out on him but he has a lot of the qualities I look for in my guys. His temperament is fabulous, he is kind to the girls living in his tractor with him and he had 2 other boys in there, too that he was gentle but firm with that have been sold in the last week. These are not necessarily girls he will be breeding, although that overly Mottled girl is not related (Thank you, Nella Bean!) and I would like to try them together at some point. I also have a few blue Mottled that have a lot of white that I may put him over. Oh, the possibilities!

he looks good on type but his wings do appear to be low. takes after his dad i'm sure. my hens have good wings but that blue male has kind of weak wings. I think his mottling will be nice and evenly distributed once he gets his adult feathers. the tail does look barred in the pics but that looks like he had feather mites when they were coming in. I have seen that a lot this year. mites along with fleas on the dogs have been horrible
