Cochin Thread!!!

May I ask how do you breed your cochins? Do you do it naturally and clip the feathers around the vent or AI? I am new to cochins and been told it is hard for them to have fertile eggs due to all the feathers and fluff. Thanks

Group pic taken just minutes ago (4am). The last two babies were hatched during the night. Sorry for the quality of the pic

This is a testament to shipping hatching eggs. Given the fact that I got the right breeder, healthy parents, speedy shipping, & an excellent broody, I now have 4 new babies at my home. Six eggs were shipped, one had a blood ring & the other had a detached aircell, BUT the God's smiled on me. Thank you again, Amy for the opportunity to have some of your beautful birds.

That is funny but I don't blame you.
I went to an auction tonight and actually found a nice pair of Mottled. I swore it was safe to go, "There won't be any high quality Cochins there, especially this time of the year". I was REALLY suprized! The roo I will (hopefully) use for my Mille Fleur type improvement. The pullet is a blue Mottled. I have always avoided the Andalusian blues knowing the genetics would take up too much of my pen space. But she is so pretty and sweet. I've never seen any decent blue Mottles at an auction around here. - Have I justified my aquisitions enough yet?
Pictures to come.

Feels awesome when something like that happens! Going somewhere not expecting to see anything and being surprised by finding something worth-while. I went to an auction/sale/swap thingy one time with no expectations or finding anything with good quality, didnt even bring anything with me to put them in, and ended up spedning like $175 on birds and show boxes to bring them home in. It wasnt bad, because I only spent $75 for three show boxes that were 9 holes all together. Brought home 8 birds that day too, lol.

Makes perfect sense to me and I'm sure you know good quality when you see it. I've picked up birds with less justification than that.

When I look up Cochin in the Breed section in the learning center, it says they go broody frequently. What exactly constitutes "frequently." My Cochin is now 6 weeks old. I have no roos. I know it is early to be thinking of this but I thought that if I am prepared, maybe, I could have her hatch eggs for me in the future. What is their average clutch size? TIA.

I expect no eggs from my Bantams until at least 8 month old. Usually about 10 months is when I expect my Blacks to lay. I would think hatchery birds would lay at a different rate than my exhibition line birds.

My Mille Fleurs, neither hatchery nor SQ, start at about 6 mo. !? That is good to know about the blacks because I have a nice pullets now.
It has been a Merry Christmas early for me this week because I got a Black pullet from Bo Garret and the mysterious Mottled pair at the auction. I cannot wait for this next year.

I just found my favorite rooster, Monet, dead. He was attacked by something, but I don't know what. A small pullet was also killed and eaten. I am just sick. I'm really just numb and I don't know what I will do. He was so beautiful and I am just at a loss.
