Cochin Thread!!!

I wanted to start with eggs to use the Tylan dip method and try to avoid getting MG/MS in my flock this time. I am afraid to get started birds again.

I forgot to mention: I am interested in silkied, frizzled and smooth. Barred, white, partridge, and any other color would be fine.

Are there a lot of poultry farms or commercial hatcheries around you?

I don't know about hatcheries, but I do know there are several breeders around. However, the state lab told me that most of Maryland breeders have MG in their flock.

I would try to find a well-established, long-term breeder in your area. The chances are much better then that their flock already has a natural bred-in immunity.

Unfortunately for my other flock of different breeds, the breeder I used was well established. I only know of one other breeder in my area, but she doesn't have what I am looking for.

I guess I could look on your directory for more local breeders.

I think the problem you had was not per say a "sickly breed", but more of unhealthy breeding. You will find that alot of people who do this as a "hobby" are actually doing it to make money. They care nothing of the healthy breedings and practices true breeders are involved in, as long as the bird looks good, they think they should try and profit from it. Thats why its nice to be self aware of people throwing out the term SQ likes its candy at a parade. Cochins are generally a healthy and hearty breed, they originated in China so the breed itself can withstand the cold and heat pretty well. Just do some research before you decide who to buy from, and choose someone with experience and knowledge of the breed and how to properly breed and manage a flock. Just be aware of the fakeness of it all.

You are welcome. I am hoping after my first failed attempt, that I have learned enough to get a better start. Now it is just finding the right breeders. It looks like there aren't any cons other than feather foot issues.

I got some pics today and wanted to share a few with you guys. If you click the website link under my name you can see many more. These are just a few that stood out to me. (Took this pics at feeding time so overlook the full crop and wet breasts most of them have, lol. And sorry for so many pics, I get carried away so easily...)

I also got updated pics of the little Pyle colored frizzle cockerel I have, I managed to get some close ups of his color along his back and shoulders and in his cushion. As I mentioned before, he has a solid blac feather on his back, at the base of his cushion that is perfectly laced in the light orange cream color he is showing. His father was a DEEP Red frizzle cockerel and his mother was a White smooth pullet, and neother bird had any black on them anywhere, I have looked several times, even after their moult. This Cockerel has solid red and buff feathers in his cushion too, but the most of it looks to be white. Its strange, but I cant wait to see this bird mature more and see what I get. He is the start to my Red breedings. Crossed in White for type thinking that the White would be recessive and the bird would turn out mostly Red or a dingy red, not the case.(Again, sorry for so many pics.)
