Cochin Thread!!!

It all makes sense to me!!

Well said!

Please educate me.....

We bought a coop from a local breeder. Along with the coop came Cochins. We gave our 3 Millie hens and the silver laced roo to my mil. We kept the black Cochin and she is a beauty!!
My kids show for 4h and a different local breeder who specializes in cochins donated some to my kiddos. We aquired 2 blue hens and a black roo from him. He mentioned something about split breeding? They won't mix but part will be blue and part will be black... ?? Could someone elaborate for me please?

We have fallen in love with our Cochins and while we have some other nice breeds these are the best and easiest for my special needs daughter to handle. They ride around on her power wheelchair and eat from her hands. She talks an sings to them and they just jabber right back.... We even like them over our silkies.... They are more tame and gentle :)

Thanks for any help! :).

Yeah Cochins!, the true love bird.
I have never yet regretted choosing them for my first birds and their sweet dispositions are just what I wanted. Why can't I write them off as a medical expense? They certainly work better then my blood pressure meds.

Here is my daughter with her favorite bird "pepper". You are absolutely right we should be able to write them off! I actually have a waiver that helps with my daughter. She has "goals" and someone to help her each week to work on her goals. Her birds are a big part of her therapy. She has to count eggs for math, feed and water them for exercise and we actually count her singing to them as respiratory helping her lungs. It was beautiful out today and she was on her swing with this cochin just singing to her.... she talks right back... I totally wish I could wriite them off as medical expenses! We would have some awesome birds and not almost all completely donated birds! :)

Thank you so much for sharing the beautiful picture and story of your daughter and Pepper, her therapy Cochin. Sometimes we all just need to be reminded of what's truly important in life.

It blows my mind how much she loves her birds. Her former aid has kids that show goats. So when we got her a couple of chickens she decided she was going to show her chickens. I had NO IDEA showing chickens was an option, but it wasn't with our mixed layers. So I began researching a bit and found some local breeders who came through with some last minute silkies last summer for county fairs. We just never completely "fell for" the silkies. They are sweet birds, but not as calm and cuddly as the cochins. She likes to feed them from her hands and only the cochins humor her. Our cochins came when we purchased a coop and the breeder had a bunch of extras. He tried to shove 10 chicks in and I said no way and took 5. Haha I should have taken 10! We gave a few away but kept pepper because she loved her so much. We then had another breeder through 4H donate the others we have (2 blue hens and a black roo). I think the black roo is salt and the blue hens are paprika and cinnamon (??? I can't keep them straight, but she could tell you exact which is which!).

We have run into some older show judges who weren't having changes and accomodations, but overall its been an awesome experience for her! She shows the birds from the tray of her power wheelchair for showmanship. We obviously won't be doing any national shows..... nothing fancy, but she should do ok at the fairs this year. My son (who was terrified of them all at first) also has begun showing. So id say chickens are amazing therapy for both kiddos!!! Mom has somehow gotten roped into leader of poultry club.... but its an adventure! I reminded her at bed tonight that we have "chicken meeting" tomorrow. She is so excited its about eggs. I have a button quail all the way to ostrich eggs for the kids to see and hold :).

Great story! To this day I can still remember my first chickens, a pair of Buff Cochin Btms. Thats what I have stuck with since I was 3, and they are what I enjoy. When I am under alot of stress or have alot on my mind, or just want to relax, I always take a lawn chair down by the coop and let the birds free range for hrs at a time and just watch them. Did that today actually since it was nice out.

I just noticed you were in KY. I am as well, and would love to help your kids in any way I can. I would be willing to donate some birds in the future if thats possible. I have White Btm Cochins in frizzle and smooth only but if your interested just let me know and we can work something out. There are a few shows in April as well, one in Frankfort and one in Brownsville(near Bowling Green) if you are in relative closeness and would like to attend.
