Cochin Thread!!!

My two Cochin bantams are three weeks old, and one of them has vulture hocks! Is this okay? will it get passed down the line if I breed it? Is it still showable? Is this normal? thanks

the youngsters usually appear to have vulture hocks at this age. you will need to see what they look like at several months old. if they have them still then it will be a dq for show

I wait even longer than you do Mandy. But you are correct that it can be a DQ. But I have yet to see it happen at q show.

Vulture hocks are the long stiff feathers that grow downward from the thigh/hock. They are a requirement in such breeds as d'Uccles and Sultans, but are a DQ in Cochins. Young Cochins can often "look hocky". These feathers in a Cochin should be soft and pliable.

I am looking for some nice typey white cochins for showing. I live in NW AL and would prefer not to have to ship if possible. If anyone has or knows someone with show white cochins that are not yellow from the sun, please let me know, Thanks

I have a question about the SOP. I purchased the copy from amazon, but turned out that is a reprint from the 1930's or something very old.

Bantam Cochins have been recognized long enough that they are in this copy. Has the SOP for bantams changed over the years or would this information still be a correct guide for our breeding program? Thanks for any help.

You may want to get a newer one than that. I know that some Cochin Btm varieties were not accepted until 1965 and some even later. The breed description should be generally the same, but seeing as this was 70+ years ago many things have changed, and many things may have been added/updated within that time frame.
